The Colorado Mammoth defeated the Buffalo Bandits, 16-9, in front of 16,104 fans at HSBC Arena, to win the 2006 RBK NLL Championship Game presented by Edge Active Care. Gavin Prout and Brian Langtry led the Mammoth, each scoring four goals and three assists, while Gee Nash recorded 41 saves in goal. The Mammoth took an early 2-0 lead and never trailed.
The win also marks the first title for Gary Gait as a Head Coach. Gait took over for the Mammoth behind the bench this season.
Josh Sims scored the first goal of the game for Colorado more than nine minutes in, on a shorthanded breakaway. Jay Jalbert followed it up with a goal five minutes later, giving the Mammoth a 2-0 lead.
After being shutout for over 16 minutes, John Tavares finally scored to cut the score to 2-1. However, the Mammoth rattled off five consecutive goals to take a dominating 7-1 lead. Troy Bonterre scored for Buffalo with 24 seconds left in the half, but Colorado still was in full command of the game heading into the locker rooms.
Stroup and Jalbert each scored to put Colorado up 9-2, but Buffalo mounted a run to get back into the game. Five different goal scorers -- Delby Powless, Dan Teat, Roger Vyse, Kim Squire and Jason Crosbie -- as the Bandits went on a 5-1 run to cut the score to 10-7.
However, the Mammoth would finish strong. Langtry scored back-to-back goals to put them up 12-7, and after Mark Steenhuis scored to cut the deficit to four goals, Colorado went on one final run to double that deficit and seal the victory.
Dan Stroup (2 goals, 3 assists), Jay Jalbert (2 goals, 2 assists) and Josh Sims (2 goals) were also impressive on Colorado's offense.
Buffalo was led offensively by Troy Bonterre (2 goals) and Delby Powless (1 goal, 5 assists).
