 National Football League Europa

Cologne Within Touching Distance Of World Bowl

May 29, 2007 - National Football League Europa (NFLE) News Release

THE race to reach Yello Strom World Bowl XV has reached a critical stage and the run-in to the title game looks set to be exciting with the four leading teams separated by just two games.

The upcoming Week 8 action could see the Cologne Centurions clinch the first berth in the championship game if they defeat the Hamburg Sea Devils and the Amsterdam Admirals lose or tie against the Rhein Fire.

Week 8 gets underway on Saturday when the league-leading Frankfurt Galaxy (5-2) goes on the road to face a Berlin Thunder (2-5) club looking to snap a three-game losing streak. The Thunder will also be keen to record a home win having gone 0-3 at Olympic Stadium this season.

Also on Saturday, the Hamburg Sea Devils (4-3) pay a visit to the Cologne Centurions (5-2) in a game with massive World Bowl implications.

Whichever game - in Berlin or Cologne - kicks off first will go down in the record books as the 500th contest (including post-season) in NFL Europa history.

Week 8 concludes on Sunday as the Rhein Fire (2-5) sets out to break a two-game losing streak when the Amsterdam Admirals (3-4) visit LTU arena.

(Cover story Continued...)

After seeing his Frankfurt Galaxy club improve to a league-leading 5-2 mark with a victory over the Rhein Fire last week, head coach MIKE JONES praised his defense and demanded tough displays from that unit down the stretch.

He says: "We were able to make some plays and get some turnovers against a tough passing team. I know we have to continue to improve as a defense but I was very happy with what they did. We need that kind of performance from our defense every weekend."

Facing the Galaxy this week will be a Berlin team that has lost three games in a row to fall to 2-5. Despite that record, Thunder head coach JOHN ALLEN insists his team is not about to quit on the season.

He stresses: "This is going to be a test of character and I think we have a great character team. We'll come to practice ready to work and we'll get ready for the Frankfurt Galaxy. We'll go out and play hard and our goal is to win."

When the Hamburg Sea Devils and Cologne Centurions clash on Saturday, both teams will know the outcome of the game could have a huge bearing on who reaches World Bowl XV.

Sea Devils head coach VINCE MARTINO says: "Our win last week keeps us alive - it keeps us fighting. We just have to go from one game to the next and play as well as we can and try to keep winning. If you work hard and play well, you may end up achieving the goals you set for yourself at the beginning of the season."

Centurions head coach DAVID DUGGAN saw his team improve to 5-2 with a convincing victory over the Amsterdam Admirals last week.

He says of that performance: "I thought our staff had a pretty good game plan in place and our team executed well in all three phases of the game. We talked about putting together the complete game and we did that against the Admirals."

Amsterdam head coach BART ANDRUS is faced with the task of lifting his Admirals following that heavy defeat against Cologne.

He says: "All is not lost. It's not a one-game season. This was a poor performance but we'll bounce back from it. Our guys are competitive and right now they're not feeling really good about themselves. They'll come back. They'll play harder and better and they'll be better people because of this."

Also trying to get his team back on track in Week 8 is Rhein Fire head coach RICK LANTZ, who has seen his club drop its last two games to fall to 2-5 on the year.

He says: "We're just going to try to win the game that we're playing. That's our plan. Win the game that we're playing and maybe we can spoil something for someone else."

Bramlet aims to maintain elite form during title game run-in

WITH three weeks of the regular season remaining, the Hamburg Sea Devils are in the thick of the World Bowl race.

And one of the main reasons for the club's success this season has been the form of quarterback CASEY BRAMLET (Washington Redskins), who tops NFL Europa with a passer rating of 100.5.

Bramlet leads the league in passing yards (1,331 yards) and touchdown passes (12). He has thrown just four interceptions in 2007 and each of his 98 completions has gone for an average of 13.6 yards.

The second-year quarterback - who also played for the Sea Devils in 2005 - has been especially hot in the past month, compiling quarterback ratings of 100 or more in each of his past four games.

Here is a look at Bramlet's impressive numbers over the past four games:

Opp Att Comp Yds TD Int Rating

Rhe 27 18 220 3 1 113.2

Ams 23 12 185 2 0 108.1

at Ams 30 17 188 4 1 101.3

Ber 23 13 224 1 0 104.1

During that outstanding month, Bramlet has thrown for 817 yards, 10 touchdowns and just two interceptions.

Sea Devils head coach VINCE MARTINO has paid tribute to his league-leading passer, saying: "We're very happy with Casey. He is a very productive quarterback and he does a great job of managing our offense perfectly. He really helps us keep in rhythm."

Centurions can clinch World Bowl berth this weekend

THERE are plenty of ifs and buts attached, but this fact remains crystal clear: the Cologne Centurions can clinch a berth in Yello Strom World Bowl XV this weekend.

With a 5-2 record through seven weeks of action, the Centurions are in second place in the standings but can be the first club to book its ticket to Frankfurt for the title showdown on Saturday June 23.

Here is what needs to happen in Week 8 in order for Cologne to begin planning for NFL Europa's championship game.

- Cologne defeats the Hamburg Sea Devils

- Amsterdam loses or ties at Rhein Fire

With a victory, Cologne would improve to 6-2 on the season and drop Hamburg to 4-4 in the process. And that would mean the Centurions cannot be passed by the Sea Devils in the standings as they would have won both meetings between the teams.

Cologne defeated Hamburg 24-18 in Week 1.

The only other teams who can reach six wins would be the Frankfurt Galaxy and Amsterdam Admirals.

With a loss or tie at Rhein, the most wins Amsterdam could then reach is five. Berlin Thunder and Rhein Fire can also only reach a maximum of five wins as they currently have 2-5 records.

There is still the possibility that Cologne, Frankfurt and Hamburg could end in a three-way tie, meaning the tiebreaker would be the record of each team in games among that trio.

With victory against Hamburg this weekend, Cologne would improve its record in such games to 2-1 and drop Hamburg's mark to 0-3. That would mean the worst Cologne could finish in games among the three teams would be 2-2, while the best Hamburg could manage would be 1-3. Frankfurt has a 2-0 record in such games. Should they improve that to 3-1 or 4-0, they would advance out of the tiebreaker and Cologne would then win the head-to-head over the Sea Devils.

NFLE FACTS:Cologne on the run

There have been seven 100-yard rushing days in NFL Europa this season and four of them have been posted by Cologne Centurions players. DERRICK ROSS (Kansas City Chiefs) has three 100-yard outings and A.J. HARRIS gained 112 yards at Amsterdam last week

NFL scouts paying attention to free agents shining in Europe

SCOUTING departments across the National Football League will be monitoring the closing stages of the 2007 NFL Europa season with great interest in the coming weeks.

As the tense and exciting campaign draws to a close, there are several high-profile free agents who are likely to be the subject of a signing scramble as they have shown they are more than capable of competing for jobs in the NFL later this summer.

The two receptions leaders in NFL Europa - Frankfurt's BRANDON MIDDLETON and Amsterdam's SKYLER FULTON - are free agents who will hit the open market when the 2007 season ends.

Middleton leads the league with 35 receptions for 408 yards and 1 touchdown. He also leads NFL Europa with 16 punt returns for 193 yards (12.1 average) and an additional score.

Fulton, who earned All-NFLEL honors in 2006, ranks second with 31 receptions for 365 yards and 3 touchdowns.

British kicker RHYS LLOYD, who has NFL training camp experience with Baltimore and Green Bay, leads the league with 53 points as a member of the Frankfurt Galaxy.

He has converted 11 of 16 field goals, including a league record-tying 56-yard effort, and has added 19 of 19 PATs.

A pair of free agent running backs who might warrant some post-season attention are Amsterdam's JONATHAN SMITH and Hamburg's QUENTIN GRIFFIN, who was a former starter in the NFL with the Denver Broncos.

Smith leads NFL Europa with 7 touchdowns and ranks second with 373 rushing yards at an average of 4.4 yards per carry. The 2005 World Bowl winner has added 18 receptions for 116 yards and 1 touchdown.

Griffin has averaged 4.9 yards per rush while gaining 289 yards for the Sea Devils. He also leads the league with 8 kickoff returns for 285 yards (35.6 average) with a long of 79 yards.

On the defensive side of the ball, Cologne Centurions French linebacker and reigning NFL Europa Defensive MVP PHILIPPE GARDENT is likely to attract the interest of NFL clubs.

Gardent, who spent the 2006 season on the practice squad of the Washington Redskins, leads all defenders in NFLE with 58 tackles. He has also knocked down 3 passes and added 1 sack.

Another defender shining in 2007 is Hamburg defensive end JUSTIN KURPEIKIS, who leads his team with 4.5 sacks and ranks second on the defense with 28 tackles.

O'Sullivan set to take his place among elite NFLE quarterbacks

FRANKFURT Galaxy quarterback J.T. O'SULLIVAN (Chicago Bears) is preparing to move into elite company as one of the leading quarterbacks in NFL Europa history.

O'Sullivan is in his second season as a member of the Galaxy and has the team on track for a second World Bowl appearance under his guidance.

During his first season with Frankfurt in 2004, the Galaxy qualified for World Bowl XII but lost to the Berlin Thunder.

Now in his second spell in NFL Europa, O'Sullivan has an 11-4 record as a starter and has completed 226 of 357 passes for 2,815 yards, 18 touchdowns and 9 interceptions.

He needs to throw 4 touchdown passes to move into the all-time top 10, surpassing DAMEYUNE CRAIG (Scotland 1999) and CLINT STOERNER (Scotland 2001/Amsterdam 2004), who each threw 21 scoring strikes.

And with 83 passing yards, O'Sullivan will move past MIKE JOHNSON (San Antonio 1991-92) into 10th place in passing yards. Johnson threw for 2,897 career yards.

Should O'Sullivan continue at his current rate of 184 passing yards per game, he will end the 2007 season with 3,367 career passing yards, which would place him fifth all-time ahead of MIKE PEREZ, who threw for 3,257 yards for the Frankfurt Galaxy in 1991-92.

Here is the current all-time top 10 in passing yards:

Player/Team Yards

Stan Gelbaugh (Lon 91-92) 4,621

Clint Stoerner (Sco 01/Ams 04) 3,654

Kevin Daft (Sco 00/Ams 02) 3,424

Pat Barnes (Fra 99-00) 3,422

Mike Perez (Fra 91-92) 3,257

Will Furrer (Ams 95-96) 3,231

David Archer (Sac 92) 2,964

Dameyune Craig (Sco 99) 2,932

Phil Stambaugh (Rhe 01/Ber 03) 2,925

Mike Johnson (SA 91-92) 2,897

NFLE FACTS:Impressive defense

To see how dominant Cologne Centurions were against the Amsterdam Admirals in Week 7, one only needs to glance at the game's drive charts. Amsterdam's drives through the contest ended as follows: turnover on downs, punt, punt, fumble, fumble, punt, punt, punt, interception, punt, turnover on downs, punt and touchdown (on final play of game)

Sea Devils perfect the art of finishing strong in NFL Europa

COACHES talk all the time about playing for 60 minutes and finishing each game strong.

Given that is a mantra repeated in locker rooms around the pro football world, Hamburg Sea Devils head coach VINCE MARTINO must be pleased his club is taking that advice on board.

Through seven weeks of action, Hamburg leads NFL Europa in fourth quarter scoring with 58 points.

Here is a look at how each team has fared in terms of putting points on the board in the final 15 minutes of a contest:

Team Points

Hamburg 58

Berlin 35

Frankfurt 30

Cologne 27

Amsterdam 24

Rhein 16

Hamburg used all its powers of fourth quarter scoring to record a 17-7 victory over the Berlin Thunder in Week 7.

Berlin led 7-3 entering the final period but Hamburg had run out 17-7 winners by the time the final gun sounded, scoring on a 75-yard pass from CASEY BRAMLET (Washington Redskins) to wide receiver JOSH DAVIS and on a 10-yard run by TONY HOLLINGS.

Martino says: "We had some mental mistakes early in the game but we kept on working and we fought all the way. It was one of the hardest games we have played so far."

NFLE FACTS:Strange Look

The 2007 NFL Europa stats feature a couple of categories that have a strange look about them. The leader in interceptions is Cologne LB CLIFTON SMITH (Cleveland Browns) while the longest run of the year comes from Frankfurt S CHRIS LASKOWSKI (62 yards).

NFLE FACTS:Trick Shots

When he missed a 31-yard field goal against Amsterdam last week, Cologne kicker NICK NOVAK (Chicago Bears) pulled off an unwanted double as he hit the left upright for the second week in a row.
