CLEVELAND TAKES TWO YEAR BREAK FROM COMPETITION
November 29, 2017 - Arena Football League (AFL) News Release
LAS VEGAS - The Arena Football League announced today that the Cleveland Gladiators will be suspending play for the 2018 and 2019 season due to a comprehensive transformation and construction project on Quicken Loans Arena. The project will require The Q to be closed for event activity in order to accommodate major construction elements during the 2018 and 2019 seasons. Construction will commence immediately after the conclusion of the Cleveland Cavaliers seasons. The Gladiators expect to resume play in a stronger-than-ever AFL in 2020.
"The Q Transformation project will bring many positive impacts and improvements for decades to come and we know the community benefits generated by the project will be well worth the process that we need to go through to achieve them," said Cavaliers and Quicken Loans Arena CEO Len Komoroski. "The Gladiators have established a strong level of support and, while this required hiatus to accommodate the needed construction elements of the project is necessary, we also understand it is important for our community and the long-term future of The Q as an important community asset."
"The Gladiators are a historic AFL team and remain an important part of the AFL," AFL Commissioner Scott Butera stated. "We believe the renovations to The Q are impressive and will create a state of the art fan experience. We look forward to having the Gladiators return in 2020. While we are enthusiastic about The Q transformation, we remain committed to continued growth for the 2018 season and beyond. The AFL has significant expansion opportunities and strategic initiatives which are currently under discussion. We believe the future of the AFL is very bright."
