Cleveland City Stars News Release
June 29th, 2007 On a beautiful day in downtown Cleveland, the City Stars returned home to Krenzler Stadium to take on the visiting Crystal Palace Baltimore. The City Stars, playing their fourth game in seven days, came into the match with a number of injuries and some very tried players. However, the City Stars came out and played some attractive soccer for their fans. This culminated in a goal in the 79th minute with a Derek Potteiger header from a brilliant cross from Dana McGregor. On the same play, Andrew Marshall of Crystal Palace was given a red card for his second cautionable offence. The City Stars, however, could not hold onto their lead as Larry Mark broke in to equalize for Crystal Palace in the 86th minute. The goal stunned the City Stars fans and Crystal Palace held on for the 1-1 draw.
With the draw, Cleveland remains in third place with a record of 6-1-4 (22 points). Their opponents, Crystal Palace Baltimore now move into fifth place with a record of 3-4-4 (13 points).
This was the second meeting of the year between the two teams as the City Stars previously defeated Crystal Palace Baltimore 4-0 earlier this year. Entering tonight's game, the City Stars were in third place with an 8 point cushion over their playoff challengers. Tonight's opponent, Crystal Palace Baltimore is one of those challengers with a good run of points in recent games. With the 1-1 draw, the City Stars now have a 9 point gap over their nearest rivals contending for a playoff spot.
Tonight's game marked the home debuts of Greg Dalby (University of Notre Dame) and Angelo Ladera (University of Southern California). Dalby, a former US U-20 national team player started the game in central midfield and is expected to be a force for the City Stars until he manages to obtain a contract in the England. The City Stars also welcomed Aaron Chandler on loan from the Columbus Crew MLS Team for the game. These players were brought in to replace Andrew Peterson who earlier this week signed for the Columbus Crew of MLS.
Next week, the City Stars play two home games against the Bermuda Hogges (July 6) and the Cincinnati Kings (July 8). Charter One Soccer Balls will be given away to the first thousand people on Friday night and Sunday marks a special Cleveland Scores Night.
