Cleveland City Stars Only One Step Away from Hosting Beckham

June 20, 2007 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Cleveland City Stars News Release

After an incredible and undefeated start to their inaugural season and with an astonishing 6-0-2 record, the Cleveland City Star's destiny is now in their own hands. Cleveland's new professional soccer team are on a collision course with the Richmond Kickers, the only other team in all of U.S. Professional soccer that is still undefeated, and the only team standing in the way of Cleveland hosting the L.A. Galaxy and David Beckham in the third round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup as announced earlier today.

The 2006 USL-2 Champion Richmond Kickers are currently three points ahead of the expansion Cleveland City Stars in the standings, but they have also played one more game which accounts for the difference. Until the draw for the U.S. Open Cup paired the Kickers and the City Stars following their first round wins, Cleveland did not expect to see Richmond until July 21st when the Stars are scheduled to host them at Krenzler Field.

Instead, their first meeting will be in the second round of the U.S. Open Cup in Richmond next Tuesday, June 26th, 2007 at 7:00pm at the University of Richmond Stadium. Beyond the undeniable excitement of making it to the second round of the US Lamar Hunt Open Cup in their inaugural season, this match between the two undefeated teams holds an even more historic potential outcome.

The winner will play host to an MLS team. And not just any MLS team. The L.A. Galaxy and all of their superstars, including David Beckham and Landon Donovan, would be headed to Krenzler Field to play the Cleveland City Stars should CCS continue their winning ways.

"We are just focusing on the next game and not looking ahead to anything beyond the next 90 minutes to be played," explained Martin Rennie, CCS Head Coach. "We are fully aware that the Richmond Kickers are the only team standing in our way to a match with the Galaxy. But it all means nothing unless we come away with a win next week," he continued.

Richmond will have home field advantage, but the Cleveland City Stars are hoping that once again their fans will turn out in force to help them secure a victory. In an effort to fill as many seats as possible next Tuesday, the Green Army and the City Stars are organizing a very special road trip for anyone interested in making the trek to this history making match and cheer the City Stars to victory. The cost will be only $20 per person. For further details or to reserve your spot, please email greenarmy@clevelandcitystars.com. (Space is limited, so you better hurry)

Tickets for the possible Cleveland City Stars vs. L.A. Galaxy match will be made available to VIP ticket holders, and season ticket holders first and then to the general public on a first come basis after that. Details regarding ticket prices and availability will be announced shortly after Tuesdays match.

But first things first. The Cleveland City Stars need your support. Mark your calendars. Put in for a vacation day. Or be prepared to call in sick. Plan to head out to Richmond for the game on Tuesday. It doesn't get any better than this. Bring home a victory, and with it bring some of soccer's biggest stars to Cleveland!
