Cleveland City Signs New Number 10 Joshua Boateng
The City Stars have announced the signing of midfielder Joshua Boateng, who previously played collegiately at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia.
Boateng played his freshman season at Virginia Tech before transferring to Liberty University where he was named a member of the All-Big South First Team in 2007.
The following year he was honored as the Big South Player of the Year, and was named to the Missouri Athletic Club Hermann Trophy Watch List for the best player in the NCAA.
Prior to his senior year at Liberty, Boateng trialed in Europe with French club Strasbourg and Spanish club Gimnastic, but declined to sign in order to finish his collegiate career.
"We are excited to have Boateng on board," said head coach Rod Underwood. "He had a very successful college career and his talent has been recognized both in the U.S. and abroad. We are very optimistic about the energy and skill we feel Boateng will bring to the midfield."
As a senior in 2008, Boateng recorded 14 goals and 16 assists and was named to the All-Big South First Team and the NSCAA All-American Third Team.
A native of Accra, Ghana, Boateng was invited to the 2009 MLS combine and was subsequently drafted 33rd overall by the L.A. Galaxy in the MLS SuperDraft to play alongside soccer legends David Beckham and Landon Donovan.
"This is a championship team from last year and I want to help maintain that title at our new level," said Boateng. "I feel comfortable with this team because the guys are close and always making jokes so it's a fun group to be around. I appreciate what the team is trying to achieve and my goal for this year is to help us go as far as we can and influence kids lives in the community as well."
Boateng joins the City Stars wearing the prestigious number 10 jersey and the club expects the rookie to step right in and fill the shoes of retired midfielder Derek Potteiger. Potteiger wore the number 10 jersey during the City Stars first two seasons and has since taken a coaching position at the U.S. Naval Academy.
