Clearwater Sweeps Jupiter in Tuesday Doubleheader

The Clearwater Threshers took both ends of a doubleheader against the Jupiter Hammerheads on Tuesday, winning the opener 2-1 in ten innings and taking the nightcap 7-3.

Clearwater (31-25) and Jupiter (29-28) squared off for two at Roger Dean Stadium, following the postponement of Monday's game due to weather. Carlos Alonso singled home the eventual game-winner in the tenth inning of game one, while Aaron Altherr launched a three-run homer to help lift the Threshers to victory in the second game.

Jose Urena set the first 11 Threshers down in order in game one. With two out in the fourth, Kelly Dugan broke up the perfect game bid by lining a ground-rule double to right-center. Maikel Franco would ground out to short to end the inning.

Jupiter got on the board with a two-out rally in the bottom of the fifth. Isaac Galloway doubled, and a Nick Hernandez wild pitch moved him down to third. Donovan Solano singled to center to put the Hammerheads up, 1-0.

Dugan's double remained the only baserunner of the game for the Threshers until the seventh. Nick Wittgren came on to replace Urena, and Altherr greeted him with a single to right. Altherr swiped second, and one out later would score the tying run when Franco delivered a ground-rule double.

The 1-1 deadlock held steady into the tenth inning, when Jose Mojica laid down a bunt single to open the frame against reliever Kevin Cravey (2-4). Miguel Alvarez bunted into a forceout, but shortstop Austin Nola's errant throw to first allowed Alvarez to move in to second on the play. A wild pitch then moved Alvarez down to third.

After Kyrell Hudson was cut down swinging, the Threshers had the potential winning run on third with two down. Carlos Alonso came through by dropping a single to right, scoring Alvarez to make it 2-1 Clearwater.

Hernandez turned in a quality outing but would not factor in the decision, holding Jupiter to a run on eight hits in six innings. Colton Murray worked a scoreless seventh, and Jordan Guth (1-0) earned the win in his Threshers debut with two shutout innings. Juan Sosa worked a perfect bottom of the tenth to notch his first save.

The Threshers wasted no time getting on the board against Jake Esch in the nightcap. With one down and runners on first second in the first inning, Franco singled to left to push across the first run. Chris Serritella and Jonathan Roof each followed with a run-scoring single, boosting Clearwater to an early 3-0 advantage.

In the fourth inning, Brock Stassi singled and moved to second on a passed ball. Alonso was hit by a pitch with two out, and Altherr drove his fifth home run of the year out to left-center to extend the Threshers lead to 6-0.

Jupiter got one back off Perci Garner (5-0) in the bottom half. Nola doubled with two out and, after a Harold Martinez error at first extended the inning, Wilfredo Gimenez singled home a run.

The Threshers got that run back in the fifth off reliever Joseph O'Gara. Roof grounded into a double play with runners at the corners and nobody out, allowing a run to cross.

Jupiter cut into Clearwater's 7-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth, when a wild pitch and a Gimenez two-RBI single allowed the Hammerheads to rally for three runs, but that was as close as they would get.

Garner stayed perfect on the season after working 5.2 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on nine hits. The righty struck out three and walked one. Colby Shreve finished off the final 1.1 innings and held the Hammerheads to just one hit.

Clearwater will face off against Jupiter again on Wednesday for game three of the four-game set. First pitch is slated for 6:35 p.m.
