Cleveland City Stars News Release
CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Cleveland City Stars will rematch the Austin Aztex this Friday, July 3rd at 8 p.m. as they attempt to continue a two-game undefeated streak. The City Stars tied the Aztex with a stunning 90th minute goal by Ricardo Pierre-Louis on Saturday, but have still been unable to catch Austin in the league standings.
Saturday was the second game in a row for the City Stars that was decided by a 90th minute goal. The City Stars and the Vancouver Whitecaps tied 2-2 on June 23rd after a 90th minute goal by the Whitecaps, and Ricardo Pierre-Louis put on a repeat performance on Saturday against Austin. Pierre-Louis secured a point for the City Stars after a diving header in the 90th minute to bring the score against the Aztex to 2-2.
Pierre-Louis has now scored three of the City Stars 13 goals, and fellow forward Joshua Boateng is the City Stars leading scorer with four goals in eight matches. Boateng also scored the first goal in Saturday's match against the Aztex, while newcomer Israel Sesay had both assists. Sesay was awarded with a spot on the Week 12 USL-1 Team of the Week for his contributions. Midfielder Pato Aguilera leads the league in assists with five and has also secured a goal for the team. With the offense kicking into gear, the City Stars hope to build upon the 2-9-4 record and rise in USL league standings. The City Stars are currently in 10th place, just two points behind Austin.
The Aztex are ranked 9th in league standings with a 2-6-6 record. Led by Eddie Johnson and Yordany Alvares with three goals apiece, the Aztex have only scored one more goal than the City Stars. Defender Josh Alcala and midfielder Jeff Harwell scored two Aztex goals against the City Stars last week.
Friday's match will be broadcast on Fox Soccer Channel with kickoff at 8 p.m. The July 3rd match will also be the Stars Independence Day party, with the return of the Chick-fil-A helicopter cow drop. The game will feature a jet flyover, and admission will be free for all members of the military with valid ID. It will also be Dollar Dog Night, with $1 hot dogs for all fans. The first 200 fans in the stadium will receive vouchers for free Chick-fil-A sandwiches from Chick-fil-A Macedonia.
Radio host Munch Bishop of WKNR 850-ESPN Radio will serve as the special guest public address announcer during the match.
