Cleveland City Stars News Release
The Cleveland City Stars faced their first team competition since their inception, when they played the Cleveland State University Men's Soccer team at Krenzler field this past Saturday. They posted a 5-0 win with a great showing from a series of players.
Spencer Lapin, a tryout player scored two, Luke Williams put one in and had an assist, Adrian Balc scored his first goal for the team, and Derek Potteiger, the Stars most recent signing, was good for a goal and an assist. CCS Head Coach Martin Rennie was pleased to start the season out with a win and a clean sheet and commented, "This is our first step towards getting into the habit of winning".
Along those lines, the Stars are excited to introduce their new #10, Derek Potteiger. Potteiger is a graduate of Penn State University where he received All-Big Ten First Team honors three of his four years and was named team MVP as a sophomore. Derek was drafted by the New England Revolution with the 41st overall pick of the 2002 MLS Superdraft, the Harrisburg Heat of the Major Indoor Soccer League and the A-League's (USL Division 1) Pittsburgh Riverhounds. Potteiger spent the 2002 and 2003 seasons with the Riverhounds where he was named Player of the Year as a rookie in 2002.
Since 2004 Derek has captained the Harrisburg City Islanders a USL Division 2 team. He won Team of the Week honors four weeks during his first season and was named to the 2004 All-USL First Team.
In addition to owning the midfield, Derek has a major passion for kids. He was named Director of Youth Development for the Harrisburg City Islanders Academy in 2005, where he was directly responsible for the management of the Super-Y League in that region and youth development for the club.
His determination to help young people succeed and his generous heart will be great assets to the Cleveland City Stars as they pursue their mission of bringing hope and opportunity to the under-privileged kids in Cleveland.
"Derek has been a close friend of mine for many years and he will strengthen this team in so many different ways," said Executive Director Aaron Tredway. The loss of Potteiger to Cleveland is not one that the Harrisburg City Islanders will soon recover from, but CCS fans can watch him shut down the opposition weekly beginning April 28th against the Cincinnati Kings in Cincinnati.
