City Stars Add Two Rookies, Introduce Mom of the Year Contest

April 15, 2009 - USL First Division (USL-1) - Cleveland City Stars News Release

The Cleveland City Stars have signed two rookies, midfielder Eric Carpenter out of Bethel College and forward Kolby LaCrone from Marshall University. Both players have risen through the ranks after initially attending the City Stars open tryouts. The rookies made large impressions and were invited back to the invite-only combine before being brought on as trialists during the preseason.

Carpenter started at Bethel College and was named all-MCC conference in 2007 and 2008. He was an All-Region selection in 2008, and was also named Bethel College Offensive Player of the Year as a senior the same year. The 22-year old was brought on as a trialist for the City Stars after an impressive performance at tryouts, and went on to score the game-winning goal against the University of Dayton in a preseason exhibition match.

"It was a really long process for me coming from the open tryout to the invite tryout and then going through a few weeks of the preseason without actually getting signed," said Carpenter. "I'm really glad that I stuck it out and I'm extremely honored to be a part of this team. I hope that I can come in as a rookie and really make an impact."

LaCrone is a native of Zanesville, OH and enters his rookie season after appearing in 45 matches over three years at Marshall University. The 22-year old forward made 16 appearances at the University of West Virginia as a freshman before transferring to Marshall where he registered 13 goals and three assists over his career. LaCrone's turned in outstanding performances at tryouts and as a trialist.

"Having the opportunity to play soccer at the next level has always been my dream," said LaCrone. "I am blessed to join such a great group of guys and I truly respect what the City Stars are about on and off of the field, and I could not be happier to be a part of it."

Executive Director Aaron Tredway is pleased with both signings as it shows the strength of the City Stars improved player development initiative.

"We're lucky to have found two such talented young players," said Tredway. "Both Eric and Kolby have truly proven themselves in the past few weeks and have shown immense dedication and focus. We are excited to see them on the City Stars squad and know they will be a positive addition to our offensive line."

Carpenter and LaCrone join the Cleveland City Stars roster just in time for the season-opening match in Florida against Miami FC this Saturday, April 18th.
