City Islanders To Play May 14 Exhibition Game

(Harrisburg, Pa., May 4, 2005) – The Harrisburg City Islanders will face a team of Maryland College All-Stars in an exhibition match on Saturday, May 14, at Harford Community College in Bel Air, Md. Kickoff will be 3:00 p.m.

The match is being offered free of charge to the public by the Greater Harford Soccer Park (HCSP) organization. In lieu of admission, the Park Board is asking fans to bring canned food, which will be donated to the Harford Food Bank.

The Maryland College All-Star Team will be coached by Jim Cherneski, a former Towson University and United Soccer Leagues professional player. Cherneski's still-evolving roster includes the likes of Mike Pennachia, Derek McElligott, Kevin Mezzedra, and Matt Watson of UMBC; and Zak Thompson, Mike Dougherty, Sebastien Hansel, Steve Fell, and J.C. Cole of Towson.

The Greater Harford Soccer Park, expected to be completed in 2007, will be the largest soccer complex in the country, featuring 11 state-of-the-art fields, a small stadium, a training center, and other entertainment amenities. The Park will host regional camps, academies, and tournaments, along with a featured professional team as program and facility anchor.

The Harrisburg City Islanders are in their second season of play in the nine-team USL Second Division. The City Islanders' 20-game (10 home, 10 away) regular season schedule kicked off on April 16 and will run through August 13, with home games played at scenic Skyline Sports Complex on City Island in Harrisburg, Pa. The club's inaugural season included a 10-7-3 record, a playoff berth, and three standing room only crowds.
