City Islanders To Host Antigua Saturday
July 6, 2012 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Penn FC News Release
Harrisburg, PA- The Harrisburg City Islanders will welcome the Antigua Barracuda FC to Skyline Sports Complex on Saturday at 8 p.m. The game will be the first ever meeting between the two teams, which has Harrisburg Coach Bill Becher planning ahead.
"We have never played Antigua before, so we look forward to seeing a new team," he said. "They are coming off a big win against Charleston, so we are expecting a tough game on Saturday night."
Fresh off a 3-2 win Friday night over in-state rival Pittsburgh, the City Islanders will look to extend their winning streak to three on Saturday, while visiting Antigua hopes to erase the memory of a 4-1 road loss to Rochester on Independence Day.
Antigua has struggled to a 3-10-0 record this season, but not for a lack of effort. Two players, strikers Peter Byers and Stefan Smith, are ranked in the league's top 20 for points and have proved a dangerous tandem to deal with for any opposing defense.
But a strenuous stretch in Antigua's schedule may slow them down just enough for the hosts, says Harrisburg midfielder Andrew Welker.
"I know they have to play four games in eight days, plus travel," he said. "So hopefully we can use that as an advantage when they come to the island on Saturday. "
Welker, however, recognized their international experience and looked forward to the coming matchup.
"I know many of their players are on their World Cup qualifying team so obvio usly they are a talented team," he said.
Saturday night will also be "Military Night" on City Island. All military personnel will receive free admittance to the game. Also, as part of "Operation Shoebox," fans are asked to bring various items to be sent to active military overseas. A list of items can be found at www.cityislanders.org.
Kickoff for Saturday's game will take place at 8 p.m., with gates opening at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $14 for adults, $7 for youths and $12 for senior tickets. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit www.cityislanders.org or call 717-441-GOAL.
