HARRISBURG, Pa. - The Harrisburg City Islanders (9-6-6) will be on the road for the last three games of the regular season. They'll begin their trip against the Richmond Kickers (9-7-5) at City Stadium this Saturday, the third and final meeting between the teams this season.
The fifth- and sixth-place teams in USL PRO respectively, Harrisburg and Richmond have been evenly matched all season long. Playing to draws in their previous two meetings - a 2-2 game in Richmond on May 12 and a 1-1 decision in Harrisburg on June 1 - the teams have relied on strong goalkeeping and thorough defensive efforts in their season stalemate. On Saturday, the playoff contenders will have a chance to tip the balance against a close rival.
Entering a torrid and tough part of their schedule, the Islanders have battled to a 1-1-0 record in August against two of the league's top-three teams, Orlando and Charleston. After dropping a 4- 2 decision to the Lions at home on August 1, Harrisburg rebounded a week later against the Battery, scoring a critical 3-0 victory and keeping pace in the playoff hunt. An early man- advantage proved to be the boost the home team needed as they netted two first-half goals and stole the momentum for the remainder of the contest. An often late reserve with a knack for scoring, Lucky Mkosana added his sixth goal of the season in the 83rd for the Islanders, putting an exclamation point on the statement win.
Richmond also showed home prowess in their most-recent contest, defeating the Antigua Barracuda 2-0 last Friday. Late goals by Gerson Dos Santos and Matthew Delicate backed another strong showing from keeper Ronnie Pascale, who will play the final home game of his 13-year career with the Kickers on Saturday night.
After the game, both teams will finish their seasons on the road with back-to-back games. The Islanders will head west to face the Los Angeles Blues twice in three days, while the Kickers will conclude against Antigua over the same weekend, playing the Barracuda twice at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium.
