City Islanders Drop Double Overtime Decision

Reading, PA â A goal from Art Bartholomew in the 104th minute sent the Harrisburg City Islanders to a 1-0 double overtime defeat against the Reading Rage on Saturday night. The Islanders, 3-0 winners over Long Island on Friday, fall to 4-4-2 (14 points) with the loss.
Bartholomew's goal capped a night filled with plenty of rugged midfield play (a total of six yellow cards were issued, and 44 fouls were called) but few solid scoring chances. The best of those opportunities either missed the net or were adeptly handled by goalkeepers Chris Doyle (six saves in the loss for Harrisburg) and winner John Graham (seven saves). Doyle, also solid in Friday's win, made a handful of impressive stops, most of them late in the second half.
Harrisburg generally controlled the first half despite Reading's high energy level, narrowly missing an opening score when Andy Guastaferro hit the post in the 12th minute. Matt Tanzini accounted for the most dangerous opportunity of the first stanza, sending a free kick from 25 yards out just over the crossbar in the 33rd minute.
The Islanders' second-half attack also yielded some nice chances. In the 48th minute, Steve Fisher's header went just high; the rookie also rang one off the crossbar in the 63rd minute. Aleks Radovic's free kick was deflected wide in the 73rd minute, and a handful of other attempts were just inches off for Harrisburg.
Bartholomew ended the night in the fourth minute of the second overtime, finding himself on the end of a quick Patrick Stanco feed before pounding it low and through Doyle to seal the Reading win.
Notes: Harrisburg's Craig Tyrrell left the game in the 27th minute with an elbow injury...Derek Potteiger sat out the game with a knee injury; Mike Henning wore the captain's armband in his place...Pete Shellenberger was subbed out of the game in the 67th minute, leaving Keith Costigan as the only Islander to play all 954 minutes of the season thus far...The Islanders continue a busy stretch with a pair of games next week: the Northern Virginia Royals visit Skyline Sports Complex for a rare Wednesday night engagement on June 23 (7:05 p.m. kickoff), and Harrisburg heads north to take on the Westchester Flames next Saturday, June 26 (5:30 p.m. start).
