City Islanders' Crawford Named Player of the Week
June 7, 2005 - United Soccer League Championship (USL)
Penn FC News Release
(Harrisburg, Pa., June 7, 2005) â Harrisburg City Islanders defender Shane Crawford has been named the USL Second Division Player of the Week for Week 7, the league announced on Tuesday. Midfielder David Schofield joins Crawford on the latest edition of the Team of the Week.
Crawford's emergence as a key performer for the City Islanders was epitomized by his play in Harrisburg's 2-1 win over Cincinnati at Skyline Sports Complex this past Saturday. Making his third straight start at left back, the former Jamaican international was both unyielding in the defensive third and a crucial part of Harrisburg's attack (he skimmed the crossbar with a shot in the first half). Thanks to his superb two-way play, the 25-year-old becomes the second Player of the Week of the season â and in team history â for the City Islanders, joining goalkeeper Bryan Hill (Player of the Week, April 26).
Schofield earns his second Team of the Week nod this season (May 3 was the first) thanks to another productive outing against the Kings. The second-year playmaker created Harrisburg's first goal in just the second minute of the match, lofting a 35-yard ball over the Cincy defense to a rushing Chad Severs, who chipped it over goalkeeper Brian Schaeper for the early lead. The 23-year-old native of Preston, England, leads the team with two assists and is tied for the club lead with four points.
Harrisburg has now placed seven different players on the Second Division Team of the Week this season. Previously honored were goalkeeper Hill, Schofield, midfielder Mo Oduor (4/26), forward Chad Severs (5/10), defender Dustin Bixler (5/24), and midfielder Sumed Ibrahim (5/24).
