Merger Discussions Between CHL, WPHL Progress

CHL Press Release

Indianapolis - The Central Hockey League (CHL) and Western Professional Hockey League (WPHL) are close to finalizing a merger. The two leagues are holding continued significant discussions regarding a merger for the 2001-02 professional hockey season.

Top executives of both leagues, including Rick Kozuback, President and Chief Executive Officer of Global Entertainment Corporation, the WPHL's parent company, and N. Thomas Berry, Jr., CHL President and Commissioner, have had several meetings and came away from the most recent meeting with optimism.

"Our discussions have been of a very positive nature, and all parties seem committed to joining efforts to create an entity that would benefit all parties involved," Kozuback said.

"With the 2001-02 season quickly approaching, we understand the necessity for rapid progress and are working toward that end," Berry said.

The Western Professional Hockey League is currently enjoying its fifth anniversary season, while the Central Hockey League is playing its ninth season. Several geographical rivalries will be enhanced upon the completion of the merger process.

"Based upon our several discussions, both parties felt that a merger makes a great deal of sense for us all," Kozuback said. "Should talks progress as expected, we are confident that a revitalized and unified organization holds a great deal of promise for teams, players, owners and most importantly fans of professional hockey in our respective markets."

"At this time, we are all working together to accomplish the strengthening of the game of hockey at the professional level," Berry said. "The close proximity of cities would increase the fan's ability to travel and support their team in its rivals' venues."
