Joint Operating Agreement Announced in Oklahoma City

As anticipated, senior executives from both the Central (CHL) and Western Professional (WPHL) Hockey Leagues have today ratified a joint operating agreement that will see the two entities unite for the coming season of play under the Central Hockey League name. Today's announcement completes several weeks of discussions between top League executives.

While many operational details still need to be addressed, the announcement signifies a strong commitment from both organizations to join efforts in creating a unified organization that will enjoy several benefits from the agreement. Between 18 and 24 teams are expected to form the new organization, although specific franchises were not addressed today. A finalization of teams competing in the new entity is expected in the coming weeks while operational guidelines are established. The CHL completed last season with 11 teams, the WPHL 13.

Items still to be addressed are several hockey operations issues, including playing rules, roster limits, veteran rules and salary cap regulations. These issues, along with season length, number of games, divisional alignment and scheduling matters, among others, will be discussed at length at the WPHL's upcoming Spring Conference, scheduled for June 3rd through June 6th in Scottsdale, Arizona.

Rick Kozuback, President of Global Entertainment, the WPHL's parent company, was on hand for the announcement. "Today's agreement marks a significant step forward for both organizations as we unite to provide our franchises with the structure to achieve greater levels of success in the coming seasons," said Kozuback. "From a fan perspective, this agreement will increase natural rivalries and heighten fan interest. We are thrilled to form a cooperative partnership and look forward to achieving our common goal of providing outstanding professional hockey to our fans."
