CHL Ray Miron Presidents' Cup Game 5 Recap
May 10, 2014 - Central Hockey League (CHL) News Release
The Allen Americans used a four-goal second period to win game 5 of their Presidents' Cup series with the Denver Cutthroats and win the Presidents' Cup with their 5-2 win. The Americans win the series four games to one becoming just the third team to win back-to-back titles. Jamie Schaafsma scored a goal in the game and had scores in four of the five games in the Finals earning Playoff Most Valuable Player honors.
In the early going, both teams had energy to spare as Allen generated several chances and Denver was given the game's first power play, but failed to score.
On their second power play of the night, the Cutthroats hit pay dirt with Kyle Fletcher jabbing in a loose puck after a Cam Reid pinged around the posts and finished sitting in front of the crease. It was Fletcher's fourth goal of the playoffs, assisted by Reid and Lee Moffie at the 9:21 mark of the opening period.
On a later power play chance, the Fish had their chance to pad the lead but Pitton made a great save getting to the backdoor to stop an attempt but in the process lost his stick. On the ensuing flurry, the Cutthroats appeared to have a goal in sight but the cross bar was Pitton's friend as it was several times in Game 4.
The Americans missed on a couple of power plays as the period progressed and failed to find the back of the net through the first 20 minutes as the score remained 1-0 with the Americans outshooting the Cutthroats 11-10.
Allen would tie the score at the 5:13 mark of the second period on a great play from Kale Kerbashian who forced a turnover in the corner and then walked to towards the net eventually finding a streaking Darryl Bootland who buried the shot past Kent Patterson for his seventh goal of the playoffs.
The Americans would take their first lead of the night at the 10:46 mark with Daniel Tetrault doing a nifty job to keep control of the puck at the blue line and snap a shot on net that created a rebound in front for Jamie Schaafsma who scored his team-leading 10th goal of the post-season. Tetrault and Jonathan Zion earned the assists giving Allen a 2-1 lead.
Just 1:03 later, Jonathan Lessard lifted a clear down the ice the Kerbashian raced to beat the defenseman and gathered the puck and swooped in for his second goal of the playoffs and second point of the night. Just over a minute after that, the Americans made it 4-1 with Lessard scoring his ninth goal of the playoffs, assisted by Anthony Maiani and Zion at the 13:08 mark.
Allen dominated the period and doubled up the Cutthroats in shots, 14-7, and scored four times to none for Denver.
In the third period, Denver received an early power play and a chance to cut the lead to two goals but Allen's penalty killers won the battles and kept the lead at three goals.
With 1:00 minute remaining, the Cutthroats made it interesting with Lee Moffie finding an open net with the extra attacker out there for Denver making the score 4-2 but an empty-net goal for Kerbashian capped off an unbeivable night for the forward and for the Americans.
Pitton earned his fourth win in the Finals making 27 saves on 29 shots, while Patterson took the loss with 23 saves.
