Brooks, McCall To Team Up For 2001 WCHL/CHL All-Star Game
Indianapolis-The Central Hockey League (CHL) today announced the selection of John Brooks and Steve McCall as the CHL broadcasters for the 2001 WCHL/CHL All-Star Game on Jan. 24, 2001 in San Diego.
This will be the second meeting of the two leagues in an all-star event. The Carolina Hurricanes 2000 CHL/WCHL All-Star Game was held Jan. 25, 2000 in Fayetteville, N.C. The WCHL All-Stars edged the CHL All-Stars 4-3 in a shootout.
Brooks, play-by-play broadcaster for the Oklahoma City Blazers (20-10-2) of the Western Division, is in his 25th season as the "Voice of the Blazers" through his work with both the "old" and "new" Central Hockey League. This will be his fourth consecutive appearance as a CHL All-Star Game broadcaster.
A six-time Oklahoma Sportscaster of the Year, Brooks will broadcast his 1,400th Oklahoma City hockey game this season. During his broadcasting career, he spent more than 10 years as the play-by-play voice for the University of Oklahoma football and basketball teams. After his stint with OU, he worked for two years broadcasting the University of Tulsa football and basketball games. Brooks joined the Blazers on a full-time basis during the 1993-94 season.
Brooks also serves as the president of Sportscast Productions, an Oklahoma City-based organization that provides an national reporting service and a satellite uplink highlight package for 17 NCAA championships and other sporting events.
McCall, play-by-play voice for the Memphis RiverKings (19-7-2) of the Eastern Division, is making CHL All-Star broadcasting debut. In his second year with Memphis, he also serves as the director of communications for both the RiverKings and the 2001 expansion Memphis Xplorers of the arenafootball2 league.
McCall began his career in hockey covering the NHL for a small radio station in the St. Louis area before becoming the public relations director for the United States Hockey League (USHL). During his time with the USHL office, he was also the play-by-play broadcaster for the Waterloo Black Hawks (USHL). McCall has also served in seasons past as the broadcaster for the North Iowa Huskies and the Waterloo Bucks baseball team.
During the 1997-98 season, McCall made his CHL debut as the public relations director and play-by-play announcer of the Nashville Ice Flyers. He spent the 1998-99 season at Utica College in New York.
The broadcast will be available to local radio stations in CHL cities and on the internet through hockeycast.com. Fans will also be able to pick up the latest action through the CHL Web site using Scorecast (up-to-the-minute box scores).
