Memphis, Oklahoma City Lead CHL All-Star Roster With Four Selections Each
INDIANAPOLIS - The Central Hockey League (CHL) announced the roster for the 2001 CHL All-Star Team. The roster of 18 skaters and two goaltenders will face the West Coast Hockey League (WCHL) All-Stars in the 2001 WCHL/CHL All-Star Game on Jan. 24, 2001 in San Diego.
Three forwards, two defensemen and one goaltender were selected from a vote of CHL coaches and media. CHL All-Star Coaches Doug Shedden of the Memphis RiverKings and Doug Sauter of the Oklahoma City Blazers filled the remaining eight skater spots. The starting lineup will be chosen by the CHL All-Star Coaches later this week.
The Blazers and RiverKings each filled four spots on the roster. The Indianapolis Ice and San Antonio Iguanas had two selections apiece, while the Border City Bandits, Columbus Cottonmouths, Fayetteville Force, Huntsville Tornado, Macon Whoopee, Topeka ScareCrows, Tulsa Oilers and Wichita Thunder each have one player on the All-Star Team.
Ice's Corbin Leads Professional Hockey In Goals Scored
INDIANAPOLIS-Indianapolis Ice left wing Yvan Corbin became the first professional hockey player to reach the 50-goal mark this season with a goal on Sunday versus the Fayetteville Force, doing so in his 39th game played.
Corbin has been the first player to reach the half-century mark for two straight seasons, scoring 62 goals last season and leading his team to the 2000 Ray Miron Cup Championship title.
At his current pace, Corbin is on track to shatter the CHL record for goals in a season, which currently stands at 74. That mark is held by both Luc Beausoleil (Tulsa, 1997-98) and Joe Burton (Oklahoma City, 1997-98).
At the conclusion of the 1999-2000 regular season, he earned both the Bill Levins MVP Trophy (regular-season MVP) and Ken McKenzie Trophy (leading league scorer) with teammate Chris MacKenzie.
After scoring 127 points each last season, Corbin and MacKenzie are second and third in CHL scoring with 77 and 70 points, respectively.
Columbus Cottonmouths - Have a record of 20-12-5 (second place, Eastern Division)...Picked up three straight wins this week, defeating Huntsville once and Fayetteville twice...Frankie Ouellette picked up his 10th and 11th wins of the season...He has collected victories in his last four decisions...Kris Cantu recorded a hat trick in Friday's win against the Force...CHL Player of the Week Martin Menard collected three goals and five assists this week, including a two-goal, one assist performance against Huntsville on Thursday and a four-assist game against Fayetteville on Friday...Mike Martens was named to the 2001 CHL All-Star Team...He leads his squad with 28 goals and 52 points.
Fayetteville Force - Have a record of 17-17-5 (fourth place, Eastern Division)...Are 5-2-1 when leading after one period and 8-0-2 when leading after two periods...Marty Melnychuck leads the league in penalty minutes with 279...The line of Jamie Steer, Darryl Noren and Alex Chunchukov has scored every Force goal since Dec. 30...Ken Shepard returned from a wrist injury to pick up a win against Indianapolis on Sunday...Noren was named to the 2001 CHL All-Star Team...He has scored 15 goals in his last 10 games and leads the Force in goals with 33 and shares the team lead in scoring with Steer at 52 points each.
Huntsville Tornado - Have a record of 17-17-2 (fifth place, Eastern Division)...Picked up five points in three games this week...Lost 4-3 in a shootout to Columbus on Thursday...Defeated Eastern Division-leading Memphis 2-1 in regulation on Friday...Notched another 2-1 victory against Macon on Saturday...CHL Goaltender of the Week Matt Carmichael played in all three games for the Tornado, collecting 74 saves, a 1.67 goals-against average and a .937 save percentage...Derek Reynolds was named to the 2001 CHL All-Star Team...He is the only rookie on the All-Star Team, but leads the Tornado in assists (19) and points (25).
Indianapolis Ice - Have a record of 18-16-5 (third place, Eastern Division)...Have a 7-3-0 record in their last 10 games...Chris MacKenzie is currently riding an 11-game point streak...Yvan Corbin recorded his 50th goal of the season, becoming the first professional hockey player to do so this season...He also leads the league in power-play goals (18), shorthanded goals (5) and game-winning goals (8-tie)...Defensemen Bernie John collected the 300th assist of his professional career this weekend and has had seven three-or-more point games this season...Corbin and John were both named to the 2001 CHL All-Star Team...This will be Corbin's second straight CHL All-Star appearance...John is tied for the scoring lead among CHL defensemen with 51 points.
Macon Whoopee - Have a record of 14-16-6 (sixth place, Eastern Division)...Dropped two games in regulation and one game in a shootout this weekend...Will look to change their fortunes with three home games this week, hosting Indianapolis, Memphis and Fayetteville...Are just two points out of fifth place and five points out of fourth place in the Eastern Division...Bobby Davis leads the team with 16 goals and 35 points...Todd MacIsaac was named to the 2001 CHL All-Star Team...MacIsaac is second on the Whoopee roster in goals (12), assists (20) and points (32)...This will be his first appearance as a CHL All-Star.
Memphis RiverKings - Have a record 22-9-4 (first place, Eastern Division)...Lost two of three games last week, falling to Indianapolis and Huntsville...Don Parsons scored four goals and one assist in the 9-5 loss to the Ice...Parsons and Travis Riggin each recorded a hat trick in a single period this weekend...Parsons, Cory Cyrenne, Nick Stujduhar and Mark Richards were named to the 2001 CHL All-Star Team...Parsons is tied for fourth in league scoring with 63 points...Cyrenne is sixth with 58 points...Stajduhar leads CHL defensemen in points (51-tie) and assists (42)...Richards leads the league with 17 wins.
Border City Bandits - Have a record of 8-24-3 (sixth place, Western Division)...Picked up a win last week, snapping an eight-game losing streak on the road against Topeka...Will play three games at home this week, hosting San Antonio, Oklahoma City and Topeka...Saturday is the Bandits' National Marrow Donor Program Awareness Night, which will include a post-game skate with the players where fans can sign up to become donors...Jason Sangiuliano recorded three goals and one assist while Trevor Jobe added two goals and two assists in the win against Topeka...Defenseman Jim Gattolliat was named to the 2001 CHL All-Star Team.
Oklahoma City Blazers - Have a record of 26-11-2 (first place, Western Division)...Joakim Andersson scored his first hat trick of the season on Saturday, scoring three goals and two assists and finishing with a +5...Dave Shields scored two goals and three assists on Friday...Rod Branch, Joe Burton, Hardy Sauter and Marty Standish were named to the 2001 CHL All-Star Team...Burton leads the league with 79 points...Standish is tied for fourth in league scoring with 63 points...Sauter has the highest +/- among CHL blueliners at +24...Branch ranks second among league goaltenders with 16 wins and is third in goals-against average with a 2.59 GAA.
San Antonio Iguanas - Have a record of 23-11-4 (second place, Western Division)...Lead the league in goals (167), assists (268) and points (435)...Are just four points behind Oklahoma City for the Western Division lead...Will travel to Border City on Tuesday before returning home to host Topeka and Oklahoma City...Henry Kuster has the fourth highest plus-minus rating in the CHL at +23...Goaltender Ian Perkins is fourth in the league in wins with 14...Scott Green and Paul Buczkowski were named to the 2001 CHL All-Star Team...Green has collected four shorthanded goals, the second highest total in the CHL...Buczkowski is second among CHL defensmen in goals (11-tie) and is fifth in scoring (35-tie).
Topeka ScareCrows - Have a record of 19-13-5 (third place, Western Division)...Will play just two games this week, traveling to San Antonio on Friday and Border City on Saturday...Split a two-game series with Wichita, picking up one win and one shootout loss...Lost in regulation to Border City...Jay Hern, Bob Berg and Blair Manning each had one goal and one assist against the Bandits...Blueliner John Vary was named to the 2001 CHL All-Star Team...Vary is third in scoring for both the ScareCrows and CHL defensemen with 40 points...He is also third among league defensemen with 32 assists, leading Topeka with that mark.
Tulsa Oilers - Have a record of 19-14-3 (fourth place, Western Division)...Trail third-place Topeka by just two points...Defeated Oklahoma City and Border City but fell to San Antonio in a shootout...Jean-Francois Gregoire collected his first career hat trick in the loss to the Iguanas...Gregoire scored five goals on the week with a +4 rating...Jamie Ronayne was named the honorable mention for CHL Goaltender of the week after turning away 94 of 101 shots this week...Tom Gomes was named to the 2001 CHL All-Star Team...Gomes has scored 12 goals and nine assists for the Oilers since being traded from Border City earlier this season.
Wichita Thunder - Have a record of 15-14-6 (fifth place, Western Division)...Picked up shootout wins against Topeka and San Antonio last week...Will start an Eastern Division road swing this week after their game against Tulsa on Tuesday, facing Columbus and Huntsville...Lead the league in home penalty killing percentage at 88.8%...Lead the CHL in penalty minutes per game with an average of 35.9 minutes per contest...Rookie Stephen Wagner played three games in three nights, facing more than 40 shots two of those nights...Captain Jason Duda was named to the 2001 CHL All-Star Team...He leads the Thunder with 21 goals and 44 points this season.
