BUTLER, Pa. - The Chillicothe Paints (9-3), presented by Adena Health System, were unable to come up with a big hit in Tuesday night's 4-1 loss to the Butler BlueSox (3-7) at Kelly Automotive Park.

Heading into the game, the Paints were hitting over .300 with runners in scoring position and two outs. That didn't hold up Tuesday.

After the first two batters were retired to start the game, Chad Roberts and Andrew Czech singled and Connor Klemann walked to load the bases, but they were left stranded.

Butler struck first, Andrew Chuba singled to lead off the bottom of the first and then stole second and third. Kellen Sarver singled to plate Chuba, giving the BlueSox a 1-0 lead after one.

Chillicothe finally got on the board in the top of the fifth. Trace Hatfield singled to start the inning and scored three batter later on a Chad Roberts sacrifice fly to left field, tying the game at 1-1. Again, though, the Paints left a pair of runner on base, including a man in scoring position at second.

In the bottom of the sixth, Butler added two runs - the first on an RBI single by Nick Spiliotis, who drove home Sarver after leading off the inning with a hit. The second run scored on a wild pitch. Butler led 3-1 through six. They made it 4-1 in the seventh, thanks to an error and a two-out RBI double by Colton Carney.

The Paints got runners to first and second with two outs in the eighth, thanks to a hit batter and a walk, but a strikeout stranded two more.

In the ninth, a walk and a hit put runner at first and second for Chillicothe, but the BlueSox turned a game-ending double-play.

Chillicothe uncharacteristically left 10 runners on base in the game.

Canyon McWilliams (1-0) started for the Paints and got no decision after five innings of work. He allowed just one run on three hits, walked two and struck out eight. Collin Clark (0-1) took the loss in relief. He gave up two runs on three hits and struck out one over 2/3 of an inning. McWilliams, Clark, Damon Egnor and Ben Bulchik combined to strike out 12 Butler hitters on the night.

Butler starter Chad Coles (1-0) earned the win. the right-hander threw six innings and allowed one unearned run on six hits, walked two and struck out six. Tre Thomas earned his first save of the season, he pitched the final three innings and didn't allow a run, gave up one hit, walked two and struck out four.

The Paints are off Wednesday following a 9-3 start to the season. They'll return home to VA Memorial Stadium to host the Champion City Kings at 7:05 p.m. on "Thirsty Thursday" and McDonald's Night at the ballpark. Gates open at 6:05 p.m. and tickets can be purchased online, at the Paints' downtown office at 11 East 2nd St, or at the stadium.
