Chico Outlaw RHP Mikael Ryder Named GBL Rookie Pitcher of The Year
September 30, 2009 - Golden Baseball League (GBL) News Release
(San Ramon, CA. September 25, 2009) The Golden Baseball League (GBL) announced today that Chico Outlaw RHP Mikael Ryder has been selected as the 2009 GBL Rookie Pitcher of the Year. The Outlaw ace moved from the bullpen to the starting rotation and became one of the dominant pitchers in the league.
Ryder, 23, 6-0, 180, right-handed pitcher, went undrafted after playing collegiate baseball at Menlo College in northern California. He was signed out of the Arizona Winter League this February by the Outlaws and started the season in the Chico bullpen. With teammate Donnie Brandt being acquired by the Milwaukee Brewers, Ryder was moved to the starting rotation in July and responded with a complete game shutout of the League Champion Calgary Vipers in his first start. By late August he had run his record to 5-1 and was leading the league with a 3.27 E.R.A. in 77 innings pitched. In addition he had two saves and posted an incredible 60 strikeouts to only 7 walks for the year. With the Outlaws out of the playoffs in late August, he was temporarily traded to Rockford of the Frontier League to help them in their playoff push. At the end of the Rockford season he was traded back to Chico along with former University of Washington standout pitcher Eugene Cribby to complete his trade. He is the first rookie pitcher to lead the GBL in E.R.A. and is the third Chico Outlaw hurler to win this award following Phil Springman in 2006 and Ben Shockey in 2008.
