(Dublin, CA. January 23, 2009) The Golden Baseball League (GBL) announced today that Calgary Viper 1B/OF Seth Loman has had his contract purchased by the Chicago White Sox. The slugging rookie star of the St. George Roadrunners had just been dealt in an off-season trade to Calgary prior to the acquisition by Chicago.

Loman, 23, 6-4, 225 lbs is a power switch-hitting 1B/Outfielder who was signed by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim in the 2005 draft out of Lamar Community College in Texas in the 47th round. He spent two years in the Angels farm system and despite posting a .323 batting average and a ratio of a home run every 16 at bats he was released in 2008 and joined the St. George Roadrunners after the GBL season began. He had a spectacular season in St. George as he slugged 19 home runs in just 60 games, drove in a run a game with 60 RBIs, hit for a .350 average and posted a slugging average of .709. He won GBL Player of the Week awards, was runner-up for the GBL Rookie of the Year, and was selected by Baseball America as a Top Independent League prospect. He had been traded to the Calgary Vipers in the off-season to complete the trade for 3-year major league pitcher Bartolome Fortunato.

After a record of 25 GBL players being purchased by major league organizations in 2008, Loman is the first in the new year.
