Chicago Slaughter News Release
Hoffman Estates, IL -- The Chicago Slaughter of the Continental Indoor Football League, officially announced the signing of LB/WR Dejuan Alfonzo, formerly with the Chicago Rush. The native of Indianapolis, Indiana was a fan favorite with the Rush after spending seven seasons with the team.
"Having Dejuan on the squad is a great addition for our team," said Alan Perkins, General Manager of the Chicago Slaughter. "He not only was the Rush's best player on defense for the past few seasons, but he was one of the fan favorites. He is great at getting the fans pumped up and we're excited to have him for 2009."
"I like the city of Chicago and love playing in front of their fans," Alfonzo said. "I don't go out of my way to be a fan favorite, but the fans appreciate my hard work on the field. The fans see my passion for the game. Every single game I give everything I have. I always try to get the fans involved especially at home."
The 6'0", 205-pound Alfonzo was a member of the Rush for the past seven seasons, playing both sides of the ball. However, it was the defensive side of the ball where Alfonzo made the biggest impact. Going into last season, Alfonzo was named ADT Defensive Player of the Game four times and Ironman of the Game nine times. Alfonzo is also the career Rush leader in tackles, and played solely for the Rush in his AFL career. Last season, Alfonzo was third on the team in tackles and interceptions.
"I like going both ways, but I think I help the team more on defense as that is my natural side of the ball," Alfonzo added. "I'm an underrated kind of guy so I like the fact that the defenses are a little underrated with offenses putting up 70 points a game."
Despite the fact that this will be his first season playing 7-on-7 football with the CIFL, Alfonzo expects great things this season.
"(7-on-7 football) is something new I am going to have to learn," Alfonzo said. "Coming into a new system, I have to learn things all over again which can be a lot of fun for me. If you give everything you've got and know your assignments, you should be alright."
The 2009 Chicago Slaughter home season kicks off on Friday, March 6th at 7:00pm at the Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates.
