Chicago Riot News Release
OMAHA, Neb. (Dec. 10, 2010) -- The Chicago Riot opened its three-game, three-day swing with a 17-6 loss to the Omaha Vipers on Friday in Major Indoor Soccer League play at the Omaha Civic Auditorium.
The Riot had no answer for Omaha forward Carlos "Chile" Farias who netted four goals as the Vipers put together a 13-0 run in the second half to pull away for the victory. Chris Brisson, Edward Santeliz and Will Kletzien netted goals for the Riot, who had a 6-4 lead at one point in the third quarter. Chicago goalkeeper Jeff Richey had 22 saves, and Omaha goalkeeper Jose Bontti also had 22 saves.
The Riot falls to 0-3 and the Vipers improve to 2-3.
"This is just a major disappointment -- a major disappointment defensively and offensively," Riot Head Coach Jeff Kraft said. "It's hard to swallow, but it is what it is. We can either get stronger from this or fall deeper. We can't take any team for granted. We're disappointed, but now we have to look to Milwaukee."
The Riot stays on the road when it travels to Milwaukee to face the first-place Wave at 6 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 11, as part of the team's current three-game stretch (webcast accessible through MISL.net; Spanish-language radio at LaMaquinaDeportiva.com).
Chicago wraps up its three-game swing with a home match against the Missouri Comets at 6 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 12, at the Odeum Sports and Expo Center in Villa Park, Ill. For tickets and more information, visit www.ChicagoRiotSoccer.com or call 630-708-6284.
The Riot garnered the early 2-0 lead on Friday at the 8:03 mark of the first quarter with a Brisson restart goal. Semir Mesanovic assisted as he took the free kick from the right side, found Brisson in the middle of the box and Brisson tapped the ball in past Vipers goalkeeper Bontti.
Mesanovic's assist was the 50th of his career.
The Vipers' Mauricio Curiel Hernandez tied the score at 2-2 at the 3:58 mark of the second quarter shortly after Riot goalkeeper Richey could not clear the ball from his end line.
Riot scoring leader Santeliz gave Chicago a 4-2 advantage at the 10:47 mark of the second quarter on a strong setup from Bato Radoncic. Radoncic avoided a Vipers defender to feed the ball to Santeliz, and Santeliz shot from the right side past Bontti.
Omaha came right back at the 13:06 mark with a Farias goal to tie the score at 4-4. Richey came out of the goal and jumped in the air as Farias looked to be passing to his right. Instead, Farias saw the opening and took a shot into the back of the net.
The Riot missed an opportune scoring moment late in the second quarter following a Ricardinho handball penalty. Novica "Novi" Marojevic had a shootout attempt from the yellow line, but in his attempt to get around Bontti's right, the Vipers goalkeeper pushed the ball into the corner and Chicago eventually could not capitalize on the power play.
Chicago defender Kletzien gave the Riot a 6-4 advantage at the 2:55 mark of the third quarter. He was there to rebound Santeliz's initial three-point strike. Bontti saved the ball, but the ball bounced away to his right and Kletzien was there to mop up with the tally.
The back-and-forth match continued with Ricardinho shooting the ball between Richey's legs at the 5:36 mark of the third to tie the score at 6-6.
But Omaha halted the see-saw pattern when Farias notched his second goal of the night at the 7:33 mark of the third in an odd fashion. Farias played the ball off the glass in the left corner, and the ball ricocheted inside the far right post past Richey for an 8-6 lead.
It was all Farias during the Vipers' 13-0 run with a three-point power play goal at the 1:08 mark of the fourth quarter, followed by another Farias goal at the 2:58 mark off of a Bontti assist for a 13-6 lead. Ricardinho and Shaun David added goals to cap off the scoring.
