Chicago Riot News Release
VILLA PARK, Ill. (Dec. 5, 2010) -- The Chicago Riot put together a late fourth-quarter surge, but came up just short as Chicago fell to the first-place Milwaukee Wave, 10-7, on Sunday in Major Indoor Soccer League play in front of 1,094 spectators at the Odeum Sports and Expo Center.
The Wave (4-0) entered the fourth quarter with a 10-3 lead, but the Riot's Robert Gallo and Eric Lukin netted goals to put the Riot (0-2) within striking distance at 10-7. In the final moments, with Novica "Novi" Marojevic as the sixth attacker, the Riot had a couple of good scoring chances, but Wave goalkeeper Nick Vorberg was up to the task with some key saves. Vorberg posted a game-high 26 saves.
"We dug ourselves in a deep hole, but we battled all the way to the end," Riot Head Coach Jeff Kraft said. "I think if we gave that same intensity early on, I think it would have been a different outcome. Give Milwaukee all the credit. They came in our building and they did what they had to do to win."
Richey had 16 saves for Chicago, and Novi also had three saves while in the match as the sixth attacker.
Next up for the Riot is a pivotal three-game, three-day stretch, starting with a road match against the Omaha Vipers at 7:05 p.m. Friday, Dec. 10. Chicago stays on the road when it heads to Milwaukee on Saturday, Dec. 11, for a 6 p.m. kick-off. The Riot then wraps up its stretch with a home match against the Missouri Comets at 6 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 12, at the Odeum. Recent Riot signing Dorin Oprea netted an unassisted three-point goal at the 5:40 mark of the second quarter to cut the Wave's early lead to 4-3. But that was as close as Chicago would get. The Wave netted three straight goals, including a Hewerton Moreira power-play goal at the 11:47 mark of the third quarter. Moreira had two goals on the night.
In the fourth, Gallo scored at the 7:41 mark off of a Vladimir Knezevic assist to trim the deficit to 10-5. Then at the 9:13 mark, Lukin garnered a goal off of a Marco Sullo assist at the 9:13 mark. The Wave defense kept the Riot off the board the rest of the way.
Other goal scorers on Sunday included the Wave's Ryan Mack, Marcio Leite and Marco Terminesi.
