Wichita Falls Wildcats News Release

TOPEKA, Kans. - Kevin Charyszyn scored his team-leading 15th goal of the season, but it was not enough to prevent the Topeka RoadRunners from claiming a 3-2 win at Landon Arena on Saturday night.

Colin Staub also scored in the contest for Wichita Falls, while Nikita Litviak, Nick Farmer and Tommy Apap all notched assists. David Zevnik made 26 saves on 29 shots in the losing effort for the 'Cats.

The first period played out scoreless thanks to the strong play of both netminders, as Zevnik made numerous point-blank saves to deny Topeka, while RoadRunners netminder Matej Tomek steered aside all six shots he faced.

The game sprung to life in the second stanza, with the 'Runners twice taking a lead before having it cancelled out by the Wildcats.

Carlos Fornaris opened the scoring at the 3:43 mark of the second, finishing off a two-on-one with Cam Strong to make it 1-0.

The lead lasted just minutes however. With Wichita Falls on the power play, Litviak gained the zone, delayed, and softly ladled the puck towards the net. Farmer's stuff attempt was denied, but the rebound caromed right to Charyszyn to swat home for his 15th goal of the year.

Topeka took the lead once more at 16:15 of the frame, with Jasen Fernsler converting Fornaris's centering feed to make it 2-1, but once again, the Wildcats responded well.

With just over a minute remaining in the period, Matt Koch played a puck towards the net looking for a deflection. Apap's deflection attempt was blocked, but he managed to touch the disc along to Staub, who netted from in close to make it 2-2 on his 10th goal of the year.

In the third, Daniel Rzavsky scored with a wrister from the high slot to make it 3-2 at the 3:36 mark of the frame. Wichita Falls tried in vain to find an equalizer, but could not force the puck past Tomek, as the game finished 3-2 for the RoadRunners, snapping the Wildcats six-game winning streak.

The Wildcats will conclude their two-game set with the RoadRunners on Sunday, with puck drop slated for 6:05 p.m. at Landon Arena. Fans can follow all the action on FASTHockey.com, with an audio-only broadcast available via YouTube.
