
Charge's Smith Undergoes Successful Knee Surgery

Villanova, PA (June 20, 2002) - Philadelphia Charge midfielder Kelly Smith underwent successful reconstructive surgery on the anterior cruciate ligament in her right knee Thursday. Smith, who also had a small tear in her meniscus fixed as well, is expected to be back at full strength next season.
Team Physician Dr. William DeLong performed the procedure at University of Pennsylvania Hospital.
Smith tore her ACL during the Charge's 0-0 tie against the defending Founders Cup champion San Jose CyberRays on Saturday, June 1, when she awkwardly planted her leg attempting a pass to teammate Zhao Lihong. The Englishwoman had accumulated four goals and three assists for 11 points prior to the injury and was named the WUSA Player of the Month for May on the same day the injury was diagnosed (Monday, June 3).
The Charge next travel to San Diego to take on the Spirit this Sunday, June 23 starting at 8 pm (ET). Philadelphia (7-1-2) sits in first place with 23 points, five points ahead of the Carolina Courage. The Charge beat the Courage 3-1 on Wednesday night.
The Charge return home on Saturday, June 29 to face the Atlanta Beat at Villanova Stadium starting at 7 pm.
