Philadelphia Charge News Release
Philadelphia held scoreless in 1-0 loss
RICHMOND, VA (March 23) - Melissa Moore made four saves and the Philadelphia Charge unloaded nine shots, but it wasn't enough as the club fell for the first time this pre-season, 1-0, to the Carolina Courage at the University of Richmond Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Marinette Pichon had three of the Charge shots and Heather Mitts played outstanding defensively for Philadelphia, which fell to 2-1-1 this pre-season. The Charge will take the field again on Sunday against Virginia Commonwealth University, wrapping up their Richmond trip.
Philadelphia has been in Richmond since Tuesday, March 19 training with the five other East Coast WUSA teams. On Wednesday, the Charge battled to a 3-3 tie against the Washington Freedom. Mandy Clemens registered two goals in that game.
After a scoreless first half, the Courage finally registered the first goal of the game in the 87th minute. After Danielle Slaton tossed a throw-in into the penalty area, Yankowski ripped a shot that hit the cross bar and fell to the ground. She then followed it up by knocking the ball into the back of the net after the Charge failed to clear the ball out of trouble.
Philadelphia had its best scoring chance earlier in the half. After a service into the penalty area, Charge forward Kerry Connors managed to win a 50-50 ball, deflecting it to Pichon, who ripped a shot wide of the net from only six yards out.
The Charge's leading scorer in the pre-season, Clemens, played only the first half. Clemens has scored seven goals thus far through four exhibition contests.
The Charge return to Villanova Stadium on Saturday, March 30 to take on the University of Virginia in the club's final pre-season game of the season. Admission is free to all pre-season Charge games at Villanova Stadium.
