June 18, 2002 - Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA)
Philadelphia Charge News Release

The Philadelphia Charge seek to defend their standing atop the WUSA when they travel to Carolina to take on the Courage on Wednesday, June 19 at 7:00 p.m. Carolina (5-1-3, 18pts) is the league's second-place team, trailing the first-place Charge (6-1-2, 20pts) by only two points. The game can be seen in the Philadelphia area live on CN8, the Comcast Network.

Philly defeated Carolina, 3-1, in the only other meeting this season between the Charge and Courage. Marinette Pichon, who currently holds a three-game goal-scoring streak, scored twice in that game to lead the Charge to victory. Pichon is tied with the injured Kelly Smith for the team lead in points, having scored five goals and recorded one assist for 11 points. Philadelphia, which is 3-1 on the road this season, is also 3-1 all-time versus Carolina

Carolina, which is 2-1-1 at home this season, is led by Danielle Fotopoulos, whose 14 points (six goals, two assists) are good for fourth in the league. Hege Riise's 11 points are second on the team.

This past weekend the Courage moved past the Charge in team offense to pace the WUSA with 1.89 goals per game. Philadelphia's 1.78 ranks second. Defensively, the Charge continue to impress. Their 0.78 goals allowed per game ranks well ahead of second-ranked San Jose's 1.20 and third-ranked Carolina's 1.22.

Later in the week, Philadelphia will be looking to avenge its lone loss thus far this year, when it travels to California for a rematch with San Diego (2-6-2, 8pts) on Sunday night. The Charge will not return home to Villanova Stadium until the following weekend, when they host the Atlanta Beat Saturday, June 29. The first 5,000 kids 14 and under will receive a Charge Autograph Book courtesy of Hyundai.
