Charge Set for First Place Battle in Carolina

May 24, 2002 - Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA)
Philadelphia Charge News Release

The Philadelphia Charge will defend their standing atop the WUSA when they travel to Carolina to take on the Courage on Saturday, May 25 at 7:00 p.m. Carolina (3-0-2), the league's only remaining unbeaten team, currently occupies second place with 11 points, just one point behind the Charge (4-1-0, 12pts). The game can be seen in the Philadelphia area live on Comcast Sportsnet.

This will be the first meeting of the season between Philadelphia and Carolina. Last year, the Charge won two of the three games against the Courage by a combined score of 8-3. In the third and final encounter between the clubs, Liu Ailing registered a hat trick and Mandy Clemens had two goals as Philadelphia scored a franchise-high five goals in a 5-1 drubbing.

The Charge, who return home on June 1 for a 7 p.m. start against the defending Founders Cup champion San Jose Cyberrays, combine the league's top-ranked offense with a stingy defense and the stellar goalkeeping of Melissa Moore. Opening the 2002 season with four straight wins, Philadelphia became the first team in WUSA history to win four consecutive contests. The Charge have outscored their opponents by a decisive 11-5 margin.

Midfielder and captain Kelly Smith is leading the way with three goals and two assists for eight points this season. She finally had her WUSA record seven-game point-scoring streak snapped on Sunday in her team's 1-0 loss to San Diego. Moore is currently second among goalkeepers in goals against average with a 1.00 mark and leads the league in wins. For ticket information call 215-467-GOAL or log on to PhiladelphiaCharge.com.
