Philadelphia Charge News Release
VILLANOVA, PA (July 19, 2002) - The Philadelphia Charge will be hosting Women in Sports Night on Saturday, July 20 after their 4 pm game against the Carolina Courage at Villanova Stadium. Charge assistant coach Pia Sundhage and Philadelphia 76ers' senior vice president Lara White will be on hand to speak to an estimated 500 people, including over 300 local Girl Scouts, about their varying experiences of being a woman in the sports world.
The event will take place approximately 30 minutes after the final whistle and will be held on the field at Villanova Stadium. Following the night's events, the Charge will be hosting a camp out for all the Girl Scouts in attendance, as they will be able to earn merit badges, watch movies on the giant video board and sleep under the stars on Villanova Stadium's field. Got Milk and Dunkin Donuts have donated products for the Girl Scouts' breakfast on Sunday morning.
Sundhage is considered one of the best woman soccer players to ever take the field. She played for Sweden's national team for 21 years and finished sixth in player of the century voting in 1999. She joined the Charge as an assistant coach prior to the club's inaugural 2001 campaign and continues in that capacity, focusing her efforts on the defensive corps that has allowed a league-low 0.80 goals through 13 games.
Currently entering her fifth season with the 76ers, Lara White was promoted as the team's senior vice president in August 2001. She became the first female vice president in team history when she was promoted in August 1998 as vice president of marketing. At the time, she was one of only 18 female vice presidents in the NBA, She assists in overseeing the team's marketing and communications department with Executive Vice President Dave Coskey.
In addition to her administrative duties, Lara is responsible for the game presentation, or the "show around the game" within the arena -- considered by many to be among the best in the NBA. She has also played a key role in the development of the 76ers' marketing and promotional plans, which have helped contribute to the team's significant increase in attendance over the past three seasons. Lara has also received several awards for excellence in advertising and public relations.
