Philadelphia Charge News Release
The Charge had practice again on Thursday, withstanding near 100-degree heat as they prepare for Mia Hamm and the Washington Freedom in the WUSA semifinals this Saturday. Philadelphia has Wednesday off, but today it was all business as the Charge try to avoid what happened last year in the semis.
Philadelphia held a 2-0 first-half lead against Atlanta in 2001, only to relinquish the advantage in the second half and eventually fall 3-2 in overtime. With that bitter experience behind them, the Charge attempt to advance to Founders Cup II where they will battle either Atlanta or Carolina on Saturday, August 24.
Today the Charge again conducted a basic practice. Playing 6-v-3, going through some shooting drills and practicing set plays. At this point of the season, it is unlikely the Charge will show any new looks, but practicing everything is important so that the players know exactly what to expect.
Musical Entrance
This Saturday the Charge will be doing something different for the game. When each Charge starter is announced and runs out to midfield, the PA system will be playing a clip of that players favorite song. For example, Jenny Benson will come out to "Lets get it on" by Marvin Gaye, Jen Tietjen will run out to the Rocky theme song, and Zhao Lihong will run out to "It's getting hot in here" by Nelly.
X Games Fever
A number of players were attending X Game festivities on Thursday. Melissa Moore, Erica Iverson, Michelle Demko and Heather Mitts were signing autographs at the First Union Complex, site of the Games. Mitts also awarded the medals for the Women's Aggressive In-Line Skating.
Moore and Iverson also stopped by the set of Lou Tilley's Sports Connection, and spoke with Lou about the upcoming game and their nominations for year-end awards.
Looking Ahead
Friday the Charge begin practicing at 11 am. Normally practices the day before a game are light and don't last as long. Expect the same tomorrow, as the Charge continue to make an effort to keep things as normal as possible.
Practice Times
The Charge are scheduled to practice this week at Villanova Stadium. Any media outlet interested in attending is encouraged to contact the Charge PR office at 215-952-5492 before heading out to confirm practice times. Friday: 11-am-1pm Saturday: Semifinal Game presented by got milk? at 1:30 pm
