CBL Thursday Wrapup

Stars' homer beats Royales, 3-1

A Skip Adams' two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth inning broke a 1-1 tie between his Niagara Stars and the Montreal Royales at the Welland Sports Complex Thursday night.

The two-run blast came off the arm of Royales' starter Jayson Magee, who worked through the sixth giving up three runs on five hits to drop to 0-3 on the year.

The Stars scored first on a double play RBI by Rogelio Arias in the bottom of the fourth.

The Royales only run came in the sixth after Rashid Khalil singled, stole second base and then scored on an error.

Jose Quintero moved to 5-2 with the win for his Stars. He went six innings, gave up just one run on two hits while striking out 13 batters.

Sean Jones gave up a hit in a scoreless ninth inning and got his fourth save of the summer.

The Stars have won five of their last six games while the Royales have dropped 12 of 15.

London sneaks past Trois-Rivieres in 10 innings

The Trois-Rivieres Saints jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third against the London Monarchs Thursday night at Labatt Park but it would not hold as the Monarchs scored four answered runs to win the game 7-3 in 10 innings.

Ed Campaniello had a two-run double for the Saints in the third and Juan Tolentino added an RBI single in the same frame to build the early lead.

However, the Monarchs crept back into the game in the home half of the fourth. Francisco Cabrerra moved his hit streak to 16 games with a lead-off single and then was cashed in on a Kory Doan two-run homer off of Saints starter Matt Miller.

Miller received no decision after pitching six innings while giving up three runs on three hits.

The only other hit he surrender was another home run. This time it was a Cabrerra lead-off solo shot in the bottom of the sixth. The homer tied the game at three.

Pedro Ozuna notched the game-winning RBI single in the bottom of the tenth. The game winner came after a double, a hit batsman and a sacrifice bunt placed runners at second and third base. It was Ozuna's third hit of the game.

Nelson Lara took the loss and fell to 0-4.

The win went to Danny Gillespie, now 2-1 but it came after another solid outing from Monarch ace Todd Etler. He pitched six innings and gave up three runs on seven hits.

Outlaws beat Capitals 7-3

The Calgary Outlaws jumped all over Victoria starter Brad Rogers, scoring three in the bottom of the first. That lead was just about enough to ensure the 7-3 victory at Burns Stadium on Thursday night in front of nearly 900 fans.

Jhensy Sandoval had an RBI single and Pedro Santana a two-run double in the home half of the first to put the Outlaws on top early.

The Caps got one back in the fourth when Kareem Johnson (Trail, BC) slapped an RBI single and the Caps got a second run back in the fifth when Henry Pichardo drove in a run on a ground out to second. That made it 3-2.

In the bottom of the fifth, however, the Outlaws' Soichiro Keneda scored on a wild pitch by Rogers, making it 4-2.

Rogers, who chased from the game after notching just one out in the sixth, pitched 5 1/3 innings, gave up eight hits and was charged with all seven earned runs and the loss, moving his record to 3-4.

Veteran catcher Angelo Encarnacion had an RBI single in the sixth, an inning capped by a Miguel Peguero two-run homer.

That was plenty to give newly appointed all-star starting pitcher Shad Williams his fourth win on the year. He is 4-2 after the eight-inning, seven-hit, three-run performance on Thursday.

The Caps last run came via a Hectora Roa solo shot in the eighth.
