Solid pitching, timely hitting carry Monarchs to 5-2 victory over Stars

The London Monarchs rode the pitching of Raul Tiscareno and the bats of Jorge Moreno and Jeff Pietraszko to a 5-2 win over the visiting Niagara Stars Saturday at Labatt Park.

Tiscareno (2-0) threw seven solid innings, allowing seven hits for two runs against, while walking none and striking out five. The veteran southpaw from Mexico has not allowed an earned run in 20 1/3 innings this season, recording 20 strikeouts and only two walks.

Closer Ichiro Shibata came in to throw the last two innings, picking up his league leading fourth save.

Moreno, with his third, and Pietraszko, with his second - an eighth inning shot - both homered for the home side, while Francisco Cabrera smacked a pair of doubles.

Niagara starter Jose Quintero (2-1) took the loss.

Niagara was led offensively by Jeremy Walker, who went 3-for-4 with an RBI to raise his average to an even .300 on the year, shortstop Denio Beltran, who was also 3-for-4, with a pair of stolen bases, and DH Nelwin Oquendo, who was 2-for-3 with a run scored.

The battle continues tomorrow night (7:05 pm ET)at London's Labatt Park. The game is featured on Baseball Night in Canada, seen nationally across Canada on the Score Television Network.

Royales win tight one over provincial rival Saints, 2-1

The Montreal Royales edged the Trois-Rivieres Saints 2-1 Saturday night at Le Stade de Trois-Rivieres.

The Royales received a strong pitching performance from Quebec native Nat Thomas, who threw one-hit ball over six innings. Thomas walked one, and struck out five in the tough luck no-decision.

Manny Bermudez (2-1) picked up the win in relief, with Pedro Minaya earning his second save in as many days.

The Royales offense came from leadoff hitter Ruben Francisco who went 2-for-4, with an RBI and a run scored, and shortstop Cesar Saba, who was 1-for-4 with a run scoring base hit.

The Saints received a strong pitching performance from starter Robert Gauthier, who went seven innings, allowing a single run on five hits. Jose Marte Garcia (0-3) took the loss in relief.

The Saints collected only four hits on the day, with catcher Pascual Matos driving in Elliott Ayala with the lone run for the home team.

The Saints and Royales hook up in game four of the CBL's version of the Battle of Quebec in an afternoon matinee (1:05 pm ET) Sunday at Le Stade de Trois-Rivieres.

Caps rally for extra inning win over Outlaws, 8-6

The Victoria Capitals picked up four runs in the ninth to tie the game, and two more in the tenth, thanks to an Eddie Jordan walk-off home run, to beat the Calgary Outlaws tonight before nearly 2,000 fans at Royal Athletic Park.

Calgary jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third inning against Capitals starter Rafael Medina. The former Major Leaguer threw 4 1/3 innings, giving up four hits and three earned runs.

Calgary starter Jesus Matos, who has pitched with super human results so far this year, was finally touched up for some damage as the Caps tagged him for eight hits and six runs (four earned) in 8 1/3 innings of work.

Reliever Cristy Rosa (0-1) took the loss, giving up the tenth-inning two run shot to Jordan.

Caps closer Jason Lakman (1-1) picked up the win, his first of the season.

Kareem Johnson was 2-for-4 for the Caps, including a triple and two runs scored.

Jhensy Sandoval clubbed his fourth home run of the season for Calgary, and also stole two bases, giving him 10 on the year, good for second spot overall.

Tomorrow's game is a 6:05 pm PT start. Fans who are over 60 can buy their tickets for half price.
