Carolina Gladiators News Release
Smithfield, NC: The Carolina Gladiators welcomed two TRBL opponents to the SRAC over the weekend. The Fayetteville Crossover came to Smithfield on Saturday. A tight game throughout, the Gladiators used a strong inside game to take a 53-50 lead at halftime. The scoring pace slowed in the second half, but despite a monstrous game from Carolina center/forward Travis Taylor (22 points, 25 rebounds), the visitors were able to pull off the win 99-96 behind 24 points and 13 rebounds from forward DeShawn McLean. Fayetteville (2-2) shot the ball 44 more times than the Gladiators in the game.
The Sunday task would not be much easier for the Gladiators as they faced one of the league's top teams, the Wilmington Sea Dawgs. The Gladiators however came out of the gate ready to play. The teams exchanged baskets in the first half, and the visitors led 53-48 at the break. Wilmington opened up a comfortable double-digit lead by late in the third quarter, but the home team nearly came all the way back in the final five minutes. The Gladiators came up just short and lost 109-106.
Wilmington point guard Zach Herrmann (Augusta State) scored 26 points and dished out 14 assists in the win. Travis Taylor had another strong game for the Gladiators, scoring a league-record-tying 40 points and pulling 10 rebounds. Wilmington shot 48 percent overall for the game, including 9 three-pointers. Carolina plays next at PrimeTime on May 5, 2012. Wilmington hosts Big Texas on May 11, 2012. With the win, the Wilmington Sea Dawgs (4-3) move to the top of the TRBL point standings.
