San Jose Stealth News Release
SAN JOSE - The National Lacrosse League (NLL) announced today that San Jose Stealth defenseman Cam Woods has been named co-winner of the Defenseman of the Year Award for the 2003-04 season along with Taylor Wray of the Calgary Roughnecks.
Woods, 27, the Stealth's team captain, registered 19 points (6 goals, 13 assists) and collected 111 loose balls (second on the team) in the regular season. He also registered two assists and collected five loose balls in the Western Conference Semifinal against the Calgary Roughnecks on April 18 at HP Pavilion. Woods led a Stealth defensive unit which allowed just 201 goals (12.5 per game) and killed 61.0 percent of all opposing power plays, fourth-best in the league. Woods often drew the opposition's top scorer. His presence on defense also earned him a spot on the 2004 West Division All-Star team.
Last season Woods tallied 14 points (4 goals, 10 assists) and collected a career- high 119 loose balls, playing in all 16 games for the Albany Attack, which became the San Jose Stealth.
The six-foot-three, 205-pound native of Toronto, Ontario was signed by Albany as a free agent on Dec. 28, 1999.
Woods and Wray received an equal number of votes for the award as voted on by the Governors, General Managers and Head Coaches of the league's 10 member clubs. The award is for defensive runners and not goaltenders, who have a separate annual award. The voting for all player awards took place after the conclusion of the regular season and ended before the start of the Champion's Cup Playoffs.
