California Victory falls 1-0 in Portland

July 14, 2007 - USL First Division (USL-1) - California Victory News Release

PORTLAND (July 13, 2007) -- The California Victory's first-ever appearance on national television ended in a 1-0 loss to the Portland Timbers Friday night at PGE Park in Portland. The match was featured live on Fox Soccer Channel.

In the first of two meetings this weekend between the two West Coast rivals, Bryan Jordan netted a second-half strike to send the Timbers to a four-way tie for second place in the United Soccer Leagues First Division.

Victory 'keeper Eric Reed was superb between the pipes, having plenty to do as the visitors struggled to keep possession on the fast, bouncy and unfortunately dire artificial surface. His acrobatic double save in the 27th minute -- first with his left hand and then to his right -- helped keep the Timbers scoreless in the first half.

Portland found themselves behind the Victory defense on at least three occasions, but couldn't capitalize on the one-on-one and two-on-two situations.

For the Victory, new-boy Federico Bianchi had the first real scoring opportunity when he turned in Yuri Morales' pass, but Portland's Josh Wick saved easily to his left.

Wicks recorded his eighth shutout of the season tonight -- and his fourth on the trot.

Early in the second half Portland broke the deadlock when Scot Thompson made space on the right and fired a cross to Bryan Jordan, who controlled well with his left foot before driving his shot home with his right.

The Victory found the second half tough, giving up possession easily in the final third and lacking any real threat on set pieces. And while Victory substitute Aaron Chandler forced a good save by Wicks late in the game, it looked unlikely the Timbers' superb defensive record would be further breached.

With the win, the Timbers (8-2-3, 27 points) go into a four-way tie for second place in the USL First Division, while the Victory (2-9-5, 11 points) remain rooted to 12th place.

The two sides meet again Sunday at 6 p.m. at PGE Park in Portland. Check out the game live at www.usllive.com.
