June 23, 2008 - Major League Lacrosse (MLL) News Release
BOSTON, Mass. - Major League Lacrosse, the premier professional outdoor lacrosse league, announced Monday its weekly award winners for the week ending June 22, 2008, according to MLL Commissioner David Gross. Rochester Rattlers attackman Casey Powell was honored as the League's Offensive Player of the Week while New Jersey Pride defenseman Ryan McClay earned the Defensive Player of the Week award. For the second straight week, New Jersey Pride netminder Rob Scherr was named as the Goalkeeper of the Week while Boston Cannons midfielder Paul Rabil was tabbed as the Cascade Rookie of the Week. Powell helped the Rattlers snap a two-game losing skid with a 20-17 victory over the two-time defending MLL champion Philadelphia Barrage on Saturday night. He scored three goals with five assists as the Rattlers earned their first season series sweep over the Barrage since 2003. The all-time leading scorer in MLL history, Powell has scored nine goals with 13 assists this year for Rochester, which is tied for first place in the Eastern Conference with a 4-2 record. McClay helped New Jersey earn its second straight win with a 10-7 victory over the San Francisco Dragons on Saturday night. He recorded five ground balls and led a Pride defense which held the Dragons to the fewest goals in the team's three-year history. McClay leads the Pride with 22 ground balls in five games this season. Honored as the Goalkeeper of the Week after both of the Pride's wins, Scherr posted 19 saves and allowed just seven goals in the three-goal win over San Francisco on Saturday night. Over the last three games, the former Johns Hopkins University netminder has made 69 saves while allowing just 36 goals, good for a .657 save percentage. Rabil led the Cannons to their second straight win, a 14-12 victory over the Washington Bayhawks at Harvard Stadium on Thursday night. Named as the Bud Light MVP, he scored a season-high four goals and also added an assist as the Cannons defeated Washington for the fifth time in the last six meetings. The first overall pick in the 2008 MLL Collegiate Draft, the former Johns Hopkins University midfielder has scored five goals with one assist in two games.
