PHILADELPHIA, PA - The Philadelphia Soul (4-3) broke their 3-game losing streak as they defeated the Washington Valor (0-7) last night at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C. with a final score of 51-46. All phases of the team contributed to the win, which saw the Soul grab the lead in the second quarter and never look back. See Box Score below:
SCORING BY QUARTER 1ST 2ND 3RD 4TH Final
PHILADELPHIA SOUL 7 23 7 14 51
WASHINGTON VALOR 6 14 7 19 46
Soul QB Greg McGhee earned game MVP honors for his performance as he continued to fill in for veteran QB Dan Raudabaugh. He totaled 11 completions on 19 attempts for 189 yards, 4 passing touchdowns, 2 rushing touchdowns and 1 interception. He has now recorded 31 completions on 54 attempts for 401 yards, 9 touchdowns and 3 interceptions so far this season. McGhee is now second in the league in rushing yards with 88, trailing only Soul FB Adrian Ferns who has 122 yards.
As for receivers, Darius Prince continues to be the key playmaker on offense as he still leads the league in receiving yards (619) and number of receptions (52), and is second in the league in touchdowns (11) and yards per game (88.4). Soul WR Darius "Money" Reynolds also contributed to the scoring last night with 1 touchdown and recorded 2 receptions for 38 yards. WR Shaun "SK" Kauleinamoku helped get the ball down the field with 4 receptions for 90 yards.
While the Soul controlled the pace offensively, they also were strong on the defensive side, as several players made large contributions to the team win. DB James Romain led the defense overall with 8 total tackles, 1 interception and 5 pass breakups. DB Dwayne Hollis recorded 7 total tackles and DB LaRico Stevenson totaled 6 tackles with 1 tackle for loss and 1 interception for a touchdown, earning him Defensive Player of the Game. Finally DL Jake Metz recorded the 1 and only sack of the game for the Soul.
From the sports gambler's perspective, this was a bad beat for anyone who took the Soul as the 6-point favorites. A late Soul turnover led to a Valor touchdown with less than 30 seconds remaining to cut the final point differential to just 5.
Coming up in Week 9, the Soul are home to face the Washington Valor at the Wells Fargo Center on Sunday, June 10th. Kickoff is set for 4:00 p.m.
