SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - The North Iowa Bulls, proud members of the North American Hockey League, are privileged to announce that defenseman Joey Potter has committed to Union College in Schenectady, New York, an NCAA Division I institution and member of ECAC Hockey. Potter is the fourth North Iowa player to announce an NCAA Division I commitment this season, and one of five players on the current Bulls roster committed to a Division I program.

Potter is in his first NAHL season, with two goals and 19 assists going into a weekend series at the Bismarck Bobcats. The Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania native has built some impressive scoring runs along the way as well, scoring nine points in as many games after picking up his first NAHL goal on October 9 at Minot. He also opened the 2022 calendar year on a hot streak, notching points in seven of the team's first nine games of the new year.

"We are very excited for Joey and his family," said North Iowa head coach and general manager Todd Sanden. "He's a very dynamic skater, and that will benefit him at Union. His game continues to evolve and get better, and he's relied upon to contribute heavy minutes for our team. We wish Joey continued success at Union and beyond."

Potter has logged as many minutes as anyone on the North Iowa roster, as one of three Bulls players to appear in every one of the team's 46 games to date. The other two, forward Michael Mesic and defenseman Sean Vlasich, both announced their own NCAA Division I commitments earlier this season.

The Dutchmen will head into 2022-23 with a new permanent head coach as they continue their quest to return to the top of the ECAC. The program will finish this season under the leadership of interim head coach John Ronan, who was an assistant coach for Union's most recent national championship team in 2014.

"It was their coaching staff and how personable they were through the whole recruiting process and on my visit (that put them over the top)," said Potter. "I loved the campus when I went there, and it's a pretty high-level school, so I could see myself going there."

As a 2003-born player, he has two years of junior eligibility remaining following this season, but will soon reunite with teammate Greg Japchen, who is committed to join the Dutchmen program after this season.

"I got to meet a lot of the guys on my visit, and having Greg going there is really cool," said Potter. "I'm really excited about that, and it's another reason why I felt good about going there."

Potter says he will likely pursue an economics degree at Union, with a focus in business or finance.

The North Iowa Bulls congratulate Joey Potter on his NCAA Division I commitment to Union College, and wish him further success as his junior hockey career continues.
