Buchanan and Wiedmaier Named Warrior Players of the Week
April 28, 2014 - Major League Lacrosse (MLL) News Release
BOSTON (April 28, 2014) - Major League Lacrosse, the premier professional outdoor lacrosse league, announced today the Warrior Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week for Week 1. The League will choose the winners weekly based on outstanding in-game achievements. This week, Kevin Buchanan of the Boston Cannons was awarded the Warrior Offensive Player of the Week, and Chad Wiedmaier of the Ohio Machine was awarded the Warrior Defensive Player of the Week.
Buchanan led the Cannons to a 15-9 victory over the Chesapeake Bayhawks in their season home opener, netting seven goals and scooping two ground balls, setting an impressive career high for goals scored in a game. Speaking of his achievements, Buchanan said that it was "a great experience. Obviously anytime you can contribute to a victory over the reigning champs is fantastic." Buchanan opened up the scoring in the first and second quarter with power play goals, taking full advantage of the extra man situation. He then netted four other goals before halftime, capping off his scoring barrage with his seventh, unassisted, in the third quarter.
Wiedmaier led the Machine's steadfast defense in their 15-8 victory over the Charlotte Hounds, defeating them for the first time in Machine history and doing so by a club record-setting seven-goal margin. While Ohio's offense set to work accruing points, Wiedmaier and the Machine defense propelled any attack that came their way, disallowing the Hounds from scoring into the double digits.
Even though Wiedmaier said it is "a great honor" to win the award, he voiced his belief that other Machine players were more deserving.
"Everybody played great," he said. "(Machine goalie) Scott Rodgers was more deserving than me...it's really easy as a defensive player to know you have a great goalie playing behind you."
When Wiedmaier isn't shutting down some of the best offensive teams in the League, he's coaching, teaching, and mentoring future players as one of the national coaches of Trilogy Lacrosse, the official lacrosse education partner of the MLL. He also serves as one of the program's marketing associates.
Both Buchanan and Wiedmaier will be back in action this week with their respective teams, as Boston travels to Rochester on Friday, May 2 at 7:30 p.m. and the Machine visit Denver for the "May the Fourth Be with You" home opener in which the players will wear Star Wars themed uniforms. That game will be on Sunday May 4, at 5 p.m. Both games can be seen across the country on several of the League's regional broadcast partners as well as on ESPN3.com.
