Brownsville evens record with shutout of Laredo

HARLINGEN, Texas-Buddy Bengal and two relievers combined on a two-hit shutout to lead the Brownsville Toros to a 5-0 vicotry over the Laredo Broncos in Texas Winter League action.
The host Harlingen WhiteWings play Edinburg in Saturday's nightcap at 7 p.m.
Bengal, who pitched for the Alexandria Aces last summer in the United League, allowed one hit in five innings. Bengal walked two and struck out five. The only hit Bengal (1-0) allowed was a fourth inning single to Andrew Revall.
Brad Turney and Jason Moody each pitched a scoreless inning for Brownsville (1-1).
Kevin MacIlvane singled home the first run in the first inning for Brownsville off Laredo starter Jeremy Schultz (0-1). In the fourth inning, Courtney Delahoussaye and Ryan Valyan registered RBI singles off pitcher Kenny Sabourin. MacIlvane had two hits and scored a run.
Laredo (1-1) had just four baserunners total. Revall, a center fielder trying to earn a full-time job in the league, singled twice for both the Broncos hits.
The Texas Winter League is an extended tryout for high school and college players who were not drafted or signed by professional baseball clubs. About a dozen players from last summer's United Baseball League are also participating. The four teams will play 24 games in 28 days. Games are at 11 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 3:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturdays. No games on Sundays.
Monday's schedule: Harlingen vs. Laredo at 11 a.m., and Brownsville vs. Edinburg at 3:30 p.m.
