Philadelphia Soul News Release

PHILADELPHIA (July 25, 2012) - The Arena Football League has announced that Philadelphia Soul fullback/linebacker, Melik Brown (6-2, 280, North Carolina), has been named the JLS Ironman of the Week for his all-around performance in Philadelphia's 69-34 victory over the Utah Blaze on Sunday, July 22.

"I am glad to see Melik receive the recognition that he deserves," said Soul head coach Doug Plank. "His versatility has made him an extremely valuable part of our team and his success is directly related to his hard work and dedication during practice."

Brown stepped up in the fourth quarter of the victory over Utah. On special teams, he recovered a bobbled kick return off the iron in the end zone for a touchdown. On the offensive end, he only ran the ball twice, but recorded an exciting one-yard touchdown pass to Jeff Hughley for the final score of the game. He also collected an assisted tackle on defense.

The former Tarheel has truly been a jack of all trades for the Soul so far in 2012. Brown, who has played more positions than any other player in the AFL, has started on offense and defense while playing multiple games where has played offense, defense and special teams. On offense, he served as a backup fullback for National Guard MVP and Russell Athletic Offensive Player of the Year candidate Derrick Ross and contributed 13 carries for 55 yards and four touchdowns. He's also filled in on the offensive line. On defense, he recorded 15.5 tackles, forced a fumble, recovered two fumbles and broke up a pass. The second-year veteran earned JLS Ironman of the Game honors three times in 2012.
