Brevig Becomes a Buckeye

Ohio State University has become home for Blizzard alum Drew Brevig this hockey season. The 2011 graduate of Lakeville South High School (Lakeville, MN) was a top defenseman for the Blizzard during the 2012-2013 season. While with the Blizzard, Brevig lead all defenseman with 34 points with 10 goals and 24 assists. His offensive mindset on defense was an important piece of the Blizzard's playoff run in their inaugural season in Brookings.
"Drew was a special player for us last year. He is a physically gifted player that played in all situations," said Blizzard head coach Cory Laylin. "He has excellent vision and skating ability which will allow him to be a very successful player at the D1 level. "
Announcing his commitment to OSU in the middle of last season, Brevig has found success early in his Buckeye career. Drew has played in nine games for the Buckeyes this year has seen significant ice time as a freshman and contributed heavily to the team's success and 9-4 start. He has recorded six points with one goal and five assists.
When asked about the biggest challenge he has encountered in the transition from junior hockey to college, Brevig noted that the shorter schedule makes for a lot more intensity.
"The energy level and desperation in games is at a whole different level in college," said the new Buckeye. "My favorite memory in college so far is coming out of the weekend with a sweep and my first career goal," Brevig added.
Brevig was quick to touch on what he missed the most about Brookings.
" My billet family, the Ways, Brian, Dana, Brenden, and miss Lyndsey Helene. I miss the junior atmosphere of games with the rivalries of playing a team so many times. I also miss the group of guys we had in that locker room, a special group that will always keep in touch," said Brevig.
Moving on to a new coaching staff, Brevig recalls fondly upon his times with Coach Cory Laylin. "I learned a lot from Cory and he helped me improve my game in a lot of ways. He was a very successful player so he can give a player a lot of in-game tips that many coaches cannot."
"Drew was a solid leader for us both on and off the ice," said Laylin. "He was great in the community and positively impacted a lot of people's lives during his time here in Brookings. As an organization we couldn't be happier for him and wish him all the best, and we hope to provide many other players with similar opportunities to develop like Drew did."
The Ohio State Buckeyes pick up play this Friday in Ann Arbor, MI against their archrivals the Michigan Wolverines at 7pm.
