Breakers Go On Scoring Binge
Published on June 22, 2002 under Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA) News Release
BOSTON - Dagny Mellgren and Maren Meinert each scored two goals as the Boston Breakers downed the New York Power 5-2 Saturday evening at Nickerson Field. The five goals were a club record for Boston (3-5-4, 13 pts), while New York (2-8-1, 7 pts) dropped its fourth consecutive match to remain in last place in the WUSA.
Boston opened the scoring in the 4th minute when Mellgren scored her seventh goal of the season. After receiving a pass from Angela Hucles, Mellgen slid a precise ball past New York goalkeeper Gao Hong. Gao, one of nine Chinese players in the WUSA, made her 2002 debut after missing the first 11 matches while recovering from offseason wrist surgery.
New York evened the score at 1-1 in the 15th minute when Tiffeny Milbrett scored her WUSA-high eighth goal of the season. Sara Whalen's cross into the box was poorly cleared by a Boston defender, and Milbrett pounced on the ball to beat Boston goalkeeper Karina Lebanc with a low shot. It was Milbrett's sixth career goal against Boston.
Five minutes later Boston went up 2-1 when Meinert scored with a tricky side kick after receiving a nice ball from Monica Gonzalez. The Breakers made it 3-1 in the 27th minute when Meinert dribbled 20 yards, cut back at the top of the box, split two New York defenders and cracked a low shot that hit the post and slid past Gao.
New York narrowed the gap to 3-2 in the 39th minute when Emily Janss finished off nice cross from Milbrett.
Boston regained the momentum early in the second half courtesy of the New York defense when the Power's back line tried to clear the ball, but it deflected off Wynne McIntosh in the 47th minute to make it 4-2. The high-powered Boston attack continued to push forward, and Mellgren made it 5-2 in the 58th minute when she chipped the ball over Gao for her eighth goal of the year. The Norwegian international is currently tied with Milbrett for the WUSA goal-scoring lead.
Boston, which had been held to three goals in its last three games, picked up its first victory since a 2-1 win at New York on May 18. The Breakers has gone 0-2-2 in their last four games prior to tonight's win.
