Brahmas Spoil Parents' Night for Wildcats
January 21, 2017 - North American Hockey League (NAHL)
Wichita Falls Wildcats News Release
Hoping to kick off Children's Miracle Network weekend on a high note, the Wildcats fell flat to the Lone Star Brahmas in a disappointing 5-1 defeat.
A sentimental pre-game slideshow honoring Parents' Night may have doused the fire in the Wildcats' hearts, as they did not jump out to a good start against their rivals.
Through the first dozen minutes of the game, the Cats were outshot 12-2. Jared Dempsey was rock-solid in net, keeping the game scoreless through the first period. At the other end, Alec Calvaruso was far less busy. He was forced to make only five saves in the opening period for the Brahmas.
The Brahmas finally solved Dempsey 6:37 into the second period. Austin Kamer located the puck out of a frenzy in front of the Wildcats' goal, and lifted a shot over Dempsey to open the scoring.
Just a minute and eleven seconds later, Lone Star scored another power play goal. Hunter Stanley found himself on a quick 2-on-1 with Troy York. Stanley fed York in the left circle, and the Lone Star veteran ripped a one-timer past Dempsey.
Near the end of the second frame, a heavy collision along the right half wall in the Wildcats' zone caused a pane of glass to shatter, which would initiate the end of the second period despite 2:06 remaining on the clock. The remaining time would be played out after the second intermission.
Things went from bad to worse for the Cats in the third period. Despite a promising start to the closing frame, Calvaruso kept the Wildcats frustrated with his sturdy goaltending.
The wheels came off as three unanswered goals would be scored by Kamer and Justin Addamo, before a consolation tally was stuffed home by Steven Tillie in the last minute to end the shutout bid of Calvaruso.
Dempsey stopped 33 of the 38 shots which came his way as he was handed his fifth regulation defeat of the season. Calvaruso earned his 17th victory, denying 21 of the Cats' 22 bids. The puck drops at 5:05 pm tomorrow for Jersey off our Back Night. Fans are asked to dress like it's the ¬Ë70's!
