Published on February 25, 2013 under Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) News Release
BALTIMORE - Lucas Roque had a pair of goals as the Baltimore Blast took a 10-6 victory against the Milwaukee Wave on Saturday night in front of 6,386 fans at 1st Mariner Arena. The victory allowed the Blast to claim a split of the season series with the Wave and the head-to-head tiebreaker, which following Milwaukee's defeat against Rochester on Sunday allowed the Blast to earn the No. 1 seed in the MISL Playoffs.
The Blast took the lead early with Jamie Darvill scoring his first goal of the season less than three minutes in, while Adauto Neto added a power-play goal later in the first quarter to make it 4-0. Milwaukee hit back, Luan Oliveira scoring with 37 second remaining in the period, but the Blast restored their four-point lead through Roque's first 67 seconds into the second.
Milwaukee then put the clamps on the Blast's attack, though, and Bryan Perez scored midway through the second to cut the Wave's deficit to two at the break. Ian Bennett then tied the game midway through the third quarter, giving his side hope of earning the top seed for itself.
Roque came through again for Baltimore, however, scoring with three seconds remaining in the third quarter to restore his side's momentum. Lucio Gonzaga then made it 10-6 51 seconds in the fourth quarter, and the Blast were able to hold off the Wave the rest of the way, William Vanzela recording nine saves and the team recording nine blocks to preserve the win.
MONDAY
ROCHESTER 11, WICHITA 10: The Rochester Lancers held on to take a key victory against the Wichita Wings in front of 5,319 fans at the Blue Cross Arena, keeping their slim playoff hopes alive in the process. Alan McGreal had a goal and an assist to lead the Lancers, while Kevin Ten Eyck had a four-point night for the Wings.
Ten Eyck opened the scoring, driving home a shot from 3-point range midway through the first quarter, but Evan McNeley quickly answered for the Lancers to even the game with a 3-pointer of his own. The Lancers then pulled out to a 7-3 lead as Brayton Knapp scored late in the first quarter and McGreal midway through the second.
Wichita rallied to even the score before the halftime break, however, with Adrian Gonzalez and Miguel Ferrer finding the back of the net to make it 7-7. Rochester regained the lead less than a minute into the second half through Jeremy Ortiz, and Rey Martinez made it a four-point game midway through the fourth quarter.
The Wings hit back less than a minute later, Michael Mesle firing home from 3-point range to cut the Lancers' lead to one, but Gavin McInerney, who made 15 saves, and his defense were able to hold off the Wings' late push to claim victory.
MILWAUKEE 15, CHICAGO 10: The Milwaukee Wave rallied to take a season sweep of the Chicago Soul at the Sears Centre Arena, with Ian Bennett recording a hat trick to lead his side to victory.
The Wave got out to a strong start, with a goal a little more than two minutes in from Tenzin Rampa giving his side the lead. Luan Oliveira added to the lead later in the first quarter, and Bennett's first of the game made it 6-0 midway through the second.
Chicago was able to pull a goal back through former Wave player Pablo before the halftime break, but Milwaukee restored its six-point advantage as Bennett converted a power-play opportunity midway through the third.
It was then that Chicago's Carlos Farias took over, however, with the former league MVP rattling off a quick-fire hat trick to pull his side level at the end of the third quarter. Farias' goals all came within the final four minutes of the quarter, the last coming with one second on the clock to make it 8-8.
The Soul then took their first lead of the game through Carlos Muñoz's free kick with just more than five minutes remaining, but the Wave regained momentum a minute later when Nick Perera got his side back on level terms. Milwaukee took the lead for good with 2:40 to play, Hewerton making it 12-10, and Bennett added an insurance 3-point goal into an empty net to complete the win.
FRIDAY
SYRACUSE 15, WICHITA 10: The Syracuse Silver Knights kept their playoff hopes alive, and ended those of the Wichita Wings, as Neto and Andriy Budnyy each had four-point nights in front of 4,089 fans at The Oncenter.
Wichita took an early lead through Kevin Ten Eyck, but the Silver Knights got back on even terms by the end of the first quarter through Neto, and then took their first lead of the game seven seconds into the second quarter as Kenardo Forbes made it 4-2. Syracuse added to its lead as Derek Popovich scored his first goal in the MISL, but Frederico Moojen made it a two-point game at the break less than a minute later.
The Silver Knights took control of the game in the third quarter, as Neto scored his second goal just less than six minutes in before Budnyy rifled home a 3-pointer to make it 11-4 two minutes later. Tiguinho pulled a goal back for the Wings, but Slavisa Ubiparipovic made it a seven-point game again before the end of the third quarter.
The Wings attempted to rally in the fourth quarter, and back-to-back goals by Adrian Gonzalez and Moojen two minutes apart made it a three-point game with five minutes to play. Syracuse was able to add a late insurance goal from Nelson Santana, however, to eliminate Wichita from playoff contention.
CHICAGO 13, MISSOURI 2: Jeff Richey came six seconds from recording his second shutout of the season as Chicago kept its hopes of earning the No. 3 seed in the MISL Playoffs alive in front of 3,648 fans at the Independence Events Center.
The Comets would have clinched a place in the playoffs, and the No. 3 seed, with a win, but it was the Soul that put in a dominant performance. Chicago took the lead a little more than three minutes in through Alex Megson, and Matt Stewart then added a pair of goals in the first and second quarters to make it 6-0.
Megson, who finished with seven points, scored his second of the game late in the second quarter, and then assisted on Carlos Farias' 3-pointer that made the score 11-0 midway through the third. He then completed his hat trick with just more than five minutes to play in the fourth, Richey recording the assist on the breakaway finish.
Richey, who had recorded a shutout against the Syracuse Silver Knights on January 4, saw his hopes of a second dashed moments before time expired, Brian Harris scoring from close range for the Comets, but the Soul were rarely troubled as they took a big step toward reaching the playoffs.
SUNDAY
ROCHESTER 9, MILWAUKEE 8: The Rochester Lancers kept their playoff chances alive as they closed the regular season with victory against the Milwaukee Wave in front of 9,135 fans at the Blue Cross Arena. Doug Miller scored what proved to be the game-winning goal, while Elliot Fauske had a four-point game to keep his side in with a chance of a second consecutive playoff berth.
After a tight, and scoreless, first quarter, the Wave took the lead through Nick Perera early in the second. The Lancers were able to get back on even terms before the halftime break, Fauske scoring his first, but Luan Oliveira restored Milwaukee's lead a little more than five minutes into the third.
Rochester took its first lead of the game when Mauricio Salles rocketed home a 3-pointer from a restart at the yellow line, but Milwaukee regained control as Hewerton made it 6-5 with 13 seconds to play in the third quarter before Ian Bennett made it a three-point game just more than two minutes into the fourth.
The Lancers, who would have been eliminated from playoff contention with a loss, rallied late, however, as Fauske pulled his side within a point midway through the quarter. Miller then scored his league-leading 44th goal of the season with 5:51 to play, and the Lancers were able to hold on to take victory.
MISSOURI 15, WICHITA 11: The Missouri Comets clinched a berth in the MISL Playoffs as they rallied behind Brian Harris and Mads Falck to defeat the Wichita Wings in front of 4,239 fans at the Independence Events Center.
Wichita got out to a flying start, with Frederico Moojen scoring twice and Daniel Villegas once to give their side a 6-0 lead after the opening quarter. The Comets hit back through Harris early in the second, with the defender scoring two 3-point goals around a finish by Jeff Hughes to take an 8-6 lead at the break.
The Wings, who had the chance to split the season series with their I-35 rivals with a win, came back to take the lead again. Andrew Hoxie first tied the game in the third quarter, and Victor Quiroz struck from 3-point range 30 seconds into the fourth to give Wichita an 11-8 lead.
The Comets were able to rally for victory, however, as Hughes' second goal of the game pulled them within a point before Falck restored their lead with 4:48 to play. Falck then added a 3-pointer into an empty net with just more than a minute to play to make it a two-goal game and clinch his side's place in the postseason.
