Billy Thomas named CBA Newcomer of the Year

March 15, 2005 - Continental Basketball Association 1 (CBA 1) News Release

Boise, ID (March 15, 2005) — The Continental Basketball Association announced today that Dakota Wizards guard Billy Thomas was named the 2004-05 CBA Newcomer of the Year, as voted on by the league’s head coaches. It is the first CBA postseason honor for Thomas, who is currently playing for the NBA’s New Jersey Nets after being called-up on January 21.

“Having played in other leagues, then playing in the CBA and having my dream come true, that speaks volumes of the league,” stated Thomas after a recent Nets practice. “The CBA is where all of my appreciation goes for helping me attain my childhood dream.”

In 24 games (23 started) with the Wizards, Thomas averaged 20.8 points (3rd in the league) and 4.5 assists per game. He also posted 4.2 rebounds and 2.0 steals (6th in the league) per contest, while shooting 51.3 percent (183 of 357) from the floor, 81.0 percent (64 of 79) from the free-throw line, and 44.6 percent (70 of 157) from behind the three-point line (1st in the league).

The University of Kansas alum (’98) is currently averaging 5.1 points and 1.8 rebounds per contest in 18 games played for the Nets since being called up. After signing two 10-day contracts, Thomas signed for the remainder of the season on February 10.

To be eligible for postseason awards, players must have played in 24 (1/2 of the 48 game schedule) games, be in good standing with the CBA, must not be a rookie, and must not have played in the CBA before the 2004-05 season. Coaches could not vote for their own players.
