BELLINGHAM, Wash. - Longtime Bellingham hoop standout Zack Henifin, who most recently suited up for the Bellingham Slam this spring, will be heading to Romania to play professionally this fall.

Henifin has signed with the Perla Harghethi Basketball Club, a first division team which plays in the city of Miercurea Ciuc, located in Romania's Transylvania region.

Henifin, who was born and raised in Bellingham, has been a fixture locally at multiple levels. After starring in high school for the Bellingham Red Raiders, he played for Whatcom Community College before transferring to Western Washington.

As a senior for the Vikings, the athletic forward finished with averages of 10.6 points and 5.8 rebounds per game. During WWU's postseason run, Henifin was named to the NCAA West Regional all-tournament team and recorded a career-high 12 rebounds in the Vikings' national semifinal win over Stonehill College.

After the Vikings won their first NCAA Division-II national championship last spring, Henifin signed on to play for the Slam. His first season with the Slam culminated with his second championship in four months as the team captured the 2012 International Basketball League title with a 142-109 win over the Portland Chinooks on July 8.

In his first taste of pro basketball with the Slam, Henifin averaged 9.7 points and 6.2 rebounds per game. He scored in double figures eight times, and finished with a season-high 19 points twice. He also posted a pair of double-doubles during the regular season.

"I've thought about this since I was in high school and now it is less than a month away," said Henifin on his desire to play basketball overseas. "I am very thankful to have this opportunity."

Henifin will depart next month for Romanian to prepare for his team's season, which will begin in October and run through April.
